Nintendo Switch 2’s next major Metroid adventure, Metroid Ravenous, is being developed by MercurySteam, confirming long-standing speculation surrounding the project. The Spanish studio has now acknowledged its involvement, making Ravenous its first game developed specifically for Nintendo’s current-generation hybrid console.
MercurySteam’s connection to the franchise made its involvement widely expected. The developer previously worked on Metroid: Samus Returns for Nintendo 3DS before collaborating with Nintendo on Metroid Dread, which became one of the most successful entries in the series.
Metroid Ravenous Sends Samus Into a Deadly Underground World
Metroid Ravenous follows Samus Aran after her spacecraft crashes on a mysterious moon. She is attacked by five Space Ninjas and left severely wounded, forcing her to explore an underground labyrinth while searching for a route back to the surface.

The game introduces a survival-focused mechanic tied directly to Samus’ Metroid abilities. Players can counter enemy attacks, stun their opponents, and then drain their energy by feeding on them to restore Samus’ strength.
The five assassins responsible for the ambush will also serve as major enemies throughout the adventure. Each encounter is designed as a one-on-one battle, requiring Samus to contend with their distinctive weapons and abilities.
MercurySteam acknowledged Metroid Ravenous through its social media presence but has not yet revealed additional development details. The game is scheduled to launch exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 on January 28, 2027, expanding the acclaimed 2D Metroid formula with a darker survival-oriented premise.
