The renewed demand comes as anticipation grows for Metroid Ravenous, which is expected to continue Samus Aran’s story after the events of Dread.
Recent completed eBay listings show sealed U.S. copies regularly exceeding the game’s original price, while some have reportedly sold for around $199.95. Collectors seeking the Metroid DreadSpecial Edition can face even higher prices, making the physical release considerably more expensive than it was at launch.
Metroid Ravenous Sends Demand for Dread Higher
The renewed interest in Dread is directly connected to the upcoming Metroid game. Players who skipped Nintendo’s previous 2D entry are now looking to experience it before moving on to Ravenous, creating additional demand for physical copies.
Metroid Dread was already a major commercial and critical success for Nintendo. The game had sold nearly 3 million copies by 2022, but its availability at physical retailers has become more limited compared with Nintendo’s biggest evergreen releases.
That scarcity is particularly noticeable among collectors looking for new and sealed copies.
Players who simply want to experience Metroid Dread do not need to pay collector prices. The game remains available digitally through the Nintendo eShop, providing a considerably easier way to play Samus’ previous adventure.
The renewed interest has also been reflected in Nintendo’s digital storefront, where Dread reportedly climbed to the top of the eShop charts following the Metroid Ravenous announcement.
For collectors, however, the situation is different. The increasing prices for sealed copies demonstrate that physical Nintendo games can become valuable after leaving regular retail circulation, particularly when a major new entry brings renewed attention to an older title.
