“Lightning Degree” is an action-adventure Manhwa series written by Oju and illustrated by Awin that began serialization on December 12, 2019, on Kakoapage.
Ryu-Yeon lost his father to a disease when he was only ten years old. With the craftwork he learned from his father, Yeon used to carve wood into wonderfully intricate sculptures. One day, while working on the statues of his parents, Ryu-Yeon met an elderly man who was quite impressed by his sculptures. The old man found Ryu-Yeon promising and asked if he wanted to become his disciple. Having nowhere else to go Ryu-Yeon accepted the old man’s offer wanting to make the most of his life.
The pacing of this manhwa is well-balanced, and it is actually really good. The art’s also pretty good if you would like it; personally, I find Yeon’s hidden eyes look endearing. He looks so innocent, but he actually has this quirky personality, and it works with that hidden-eyes look.
At first, you might think it’s just another comedic tale, but it’s really just the first few chapters that are saturated with comedy. In actuality, the comedy sort of acts as a filter to mask the real things happening around Yeon. The constant bickering between him and his master helps him distract himself from the pain he suffered due to his father’s death.
As the plot advances, the author doesn’t hesitate to go into the nitty-gritty quickly. In fact, the story soon turns dark after just a few chapters. It’s around this time when the story actually starts to pick up. The story, at times, may get so dark that you might begin to sort of miss the comedy. Yeon even almost dies at one point, and we see how the master actually adores his disciple when he works hard to treat him.

Lightning Degree Chapter 132: Recap
Yerin questioned Ryuyeon; why did he throw the Jujube into the water? But Yeon dodged her question and started saying he was eating Jujube for its nutritional properties. Being the carefree guy he is, he went on about Jujube and even offered Yerin some. But knowing that it was all Yeon’s trick to divert her initial question, she refused and asked again if he used the Jujube to attack their enemy underwater.
Yerin was quite surprised at how Yeon, who she believed to be around her level, could attack their assailants deep underwater with just Jujube. And to think that he was using the normal Jujube, not the iron ones, which are more suited to be a weapon, was beyond comprehensible for her.
Add to the fact that heeding his words, the Red Vermillion Squad’s members jumped into the water meant only one thing… trust. Yeah, the squad members were quite annoyed at Yeon, but that didn’t change the fact that they acknowledged and also immensely trusted him.

Just then, two bodies came afloat… no, they weren’t dead; one of the Vermillion squad’s members had rescued the boy from Mount Hua Sect and brought him up before diving back into the waters to kill the remaining enemies. But before anyone could pull the boy into the ship, he plunged back in to “help” his seniors prompting everyone to commend his will.
Seeing all this commotion, Yerin asks Yeon if he would be diving in to help the guys clear out the assassins. But he refused, stating that his doing that would only lead to them feeling ashamed. But, he would help them by fishing (assassins).
Yeon brings out a sharp object(dagger, maybe) and throws it into the water at a speed that even Yerin couldn’t see. With that, all the assassins were successfully eliminated without any casualties from Yeon’s side. Everyone was amazed at the young talents of the Heavenly Martial Academy and cheering for them.
But their happiness was short-lived as one of the crew members saw many enemy ships approaching them. Not only were there still many assailants left, but worse, they had chained their ship and started to board. The once laid-back atmosphere was all gone, instead being replaced with fear. And the chapter ends with a furious Blaze Blade releasing a threatening aura as if he has had a past grudge against the assailants.
