During the December 26th NFL matchup between the Chicago Bears and Seattle Seahawks, analyst Kirk Herbstreit made comments about rookie quarterback Caleb Williams that left many viewers confused. The game, which saw the Seahawks win 6-3, prompted Herbstreit to raise questions about Williams’ leadership abilities.
Herbstreit, 55, was on the call for the game at Soldier Field. In the third quarter, he addressed Williams, 23, who was drafted by the Bears with the first general pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Herbstreit expressed uncertainty about Williams’ readiness to become an NFL quarterback, particularly regarding the hard work and dedication required at the professional level. He wondered if Williams understood the importance of preparation and being the first to arrive and last to leave.
However, Herbstreit quickly clarified that he wasn’t suggesting Williams wasn’t committed or hardworking. He admitted he had no specific information to question Williams’ efforts, but emphasized that these small details are often what set great quarterbacks apart.
These remarks quickly stirred up controversy, particularly among Bears fans on social media. Many fans expressed confusion, pointing out that Herbstreit claimed without any solid evidence. One fan asked, “Why bring it up at all?” when Herbstreit himself acknowledged not knowing whether Williams was meeting the expectations. Another criticized Herbstreit for suggesting that Williams may not be putting in the necessary time without knowing the details of his work ethic.
Some fans went as far as to claim that Herbstreit had not done enough research on Williams or the Bears’ season. This backlash followed the poor performance of the Bears, who suffered their 10th consecutive loss in the game, leaving them with a 4-12 record — one of the worst in the NFC.
Williams’ performance in the game against Seattle was also underwhelming, as he completed 16 out of 28 passes for 122 yards and threw an interception. The team’s struggles were evident, and the quarterback and his teammates were booed off the field after their final home game of the season.
After the game, Williams addressed the loss, acknowledging the team’s frustrations, which predated his arrival. “It’s my first year. Their frustrations go way longer back than I’ve been here,” Williams said. He emphasized that his responsibility was to focus on winning games and not to be swayed by the external noise, including boos from fans.
As the Bears approach their final game of the season, they will travel to Green Bay to face the Packers on January 1.
