Excited about Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 217? We got you!! After an outstanding chapter where Sukuna has finally gone through the “bath”, things have got way too serious in the story. That is why fans of the series are really looking forward to seeing, what is going to happen next, but first, let us take a quick overview of what happened in the previous chapter.
So there is a lot to discuss within the previous chapter, everything about the “bath”, the current situation with the Culling Game, Sukuna’s strength, etc, also if you have read the Chapter 216 spoilers, you will realize that the full translations have cleared a lot of details and misconceptions.
This chapter opens up with seeing Sukuna already in his “bath”, meaning that he and Uraume have safely left the Culling Game, and has returned to the Zenin headquarters. Uraume asks Kenjaku if he isn’t going to end the Culling Game, to which he responds yes, in order for the merger with MAster Tengen and humanity to being, the Culling Game needs to end.
Now going back to Chapter 145, Tengen first told us that the Culling Game won’t end until all the players are dead from either being killed or everyone refuses participation, which ever since then, you know the community, always wondered how our crew will get around the culling game because surely they wouldn’t kill each other, right? Well, in this chapter, we learned that Kenjaku made a vow to end the “never-ending” Culling Game.
Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 216 Recap
The way Kenjaku explains it, says that this is the “crazy” binding vow, and this is the only reason why he was able to create something as crazy as Culling Game, probably referring to its long-lasting effect or just the concept of being crazy in general. We don’t know if this is a binding vow with someone else or one imposed on himself, I had assumes it is on himself, with the way it is worded because he described it as a crazy or unreasonable binding vow, we can consider that the consequences of breaking it are just as lethal in comparison.
This may also correlate with the next pages of the chapter, where Kenjaku asks Sukuna to give him all their points, I am sure it will get elaborated on, but we then get the intricate explanation and history of the “bath”, saying it was originally used as a ritual, in order to transform vessels treasured as family heirlooms into a cursed tool so that they can protect them from the outsiders.
Now, it is important to note that, it is important to note that it wasn’t actually transforming vessels as in “human” vessels, as stated in the translation notes, but more specific objects that hold things, so turning certain objects into cursed tools pretty much.
That is really interesting, because the first time, we were introduced to cursed tools, it was explained that Sorceres nowadays can imbue curse energy into a weapon to make it enough as a cursed tool, but back in the old days, it had to use this bath or bathing rituals since I guess sorcerers couldn’t imbue enough cursed energy because it further goes on to say that, a solution of cursed energy is created by grinding and staining organisms chosen in a Dokoku Ritual.
The vessel or object is thus marinated for 10 months and 10 days, Kenjaku is then surprised that Uraume reconstructed this historic ritual, using cursed spirits for the Koduku aspects so it makes a lot of sense on how Sukuna gets out of the bath in the next few pages because instead of waiting 10 months and 10 days, which is a reference to how long the average pregnancy takes, Uraume speed up the duration by using cursed spirits for the Koduku.
If you read the Hell’s Paradise manga, you might remember that Koduku is an old Japanese ritual where multiple venomous bugs are dropped into the same pot where the single surviving bug would get their poisonous venom extracted for black magic. So in this case instead of black magic, it is a special extraction of curse energy I guess.
I initially thought that this bath was sped up because of some new modern technology since Uraume looked as if here she was holding an iPad, now I see that that is obviously not what I think, and I really go to show that the spoilers and the full translations can really clear up certain details.
The point of this bath was to sink Megumi’s soul deeper into this darkness, so now when Sukuna fights, there won’t be any curse energy output reduction from Megumi inside, the interesting part here is that after he gets out of the bath, Kenjaku asks that is he gonna keep his face like that… Kemjaku was referring to Sukuna’s half-sectored face.
This is exciting information to hear because I always wanted to see Sukuna’s old Heian Era features be implanted within his current body of Megumi, so seeing the four arms, the half-sectored face, and the mouth on his stomach, etc because for me it is just a cool evil design and Kenjaku says this implies that he could have gotten the face, but Sukuna says that he is doing this just for now.
Sukuna says that if he is going to fight sorcerers it is better to maintain this kind of appearance, I am sure when Sukuna ingests the rest of his five fingers, or at least before the story ends, we will see Sukuna with his old demonic attributes, however, then Sukuna notices that one of his fingers is bleeding, as to what this could mean suggests that this could be a subtle hint or signal to Yuuji obtaining Sukuna’s ability since it was stated by Goji that it would eventually happen.
Some people think that this bleeding indicates that Megumi’s body is still rejecting Sukuna, but I don’t know because we just went through the bath, and it would disregard the whole thing, so this bleeding is defiantly a subtle hint of something, and I am sure that we will learn more about it in the future.
Another misconception that was cleared from the spoilers; well two things, Yorozu is a guy! it is not that Sukuna had a love interest for Yorozu nor the other way around, but it is that Yorozu has an annoying consistent pursuit of wanting to fight Sukuna, Kenjaku saying Yorozu, has a crush on Sukuna is more of a figurative statement, giving the context, and I love during their whole conversation, Kenjaku is more like the dramatic bunce, between the three of them.
Their casualness makes me want to see a Heian Era flashback even more now, also considering that these two are the powerhouses of antagonists so you kind of wonder f Kenjaku Sukuna would ever switch sides on each other, I mean you ever really know what Kenjaku is up to and what he is planning, especially when they send Sukuna to Sendai, who asks for Sukuna’s points which again that somehow correlated to the Binding Vow of ending the Culling Game or something else, but if this means that Kenjaku is going to enter the Culling Game brings the anticipated fight even closer of Uta vs Kenjaku, it probably won’t happen soon, but probably setting up for it.
