You can stop wearing your clown make-up when the credits roll for Joker: Folie à Deux, as the sequel to Todd Phillips’ highly praised DC comics adaptation does not have an end-credits scene.
This allows viewers to take in the surprising events of the film’s ending, which is sure to spark conversations in the movie community.
It is not surprising that Joker: Folie à Deux does not include an end-credits scene, even though it is a comic book movie.
The previous film also did not have one, and Todd Phillips and DC Studios have stated that the Joker films are meant to be complete stories, not parts of an ongoing series.
We will have to see if James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new connected DC Universe will include end-credits scenes, starting with Creature Commandos and Superman, which are unrelated to the two Joker films.
The two Joker films mark the end of the previous phase of DC, which faced creative struggles following the challenges of the DCEU.
This situation led DC to show projects in entirely new continuities, as seen in the two Joker films by Todd Phillips and the ongoing The Batman series by Matt Reeves.
Now, Gunn and Safran are attempting to create a shared cinematic universe with DC’s vast list of characters, while projects like Joker, The Batman, and The Penguin are considered “Elseworlds” stories.
What is ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ About?
Joker: Folie à Deux is set two years after the first film. Arthur Fleck (played by Joaquin Phoenix) is now an inmate at Arkham Asylum as he waits for his trial, where he will face judgment for his actions in the first film.
Arthur’s life changes significantly when he meets another patient named Harleen Quinzel (played by Lady Gaga). She encourages Arthur to embrace his role as Gotham’s beloved vigilante and the Clown Prince of Crime.
Will ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Get a Sequel?
Without giving away spoilers, there will be a lot of conversations about how Joker: Folie à Deux ends. Some might view it as a final ending for Arthur Fleck, while others might argue that this is not the last time we will see this version of The Joker. So, will there be a Joker 3? If it does happen, Todd Phillips may not be involved.
Phillips has said many times that he does not plan to make a third Joker film right now. After the premiere of Joker: Folie à Deux at the Venice Film Festival, Phillips explained that he believes Arthur’s story is finished.
However, he hinted that it could still continue: “I don’t want to speak for Joaquin, but for me, the story of Arthur/Joker has been told. I can’t say yes or no, but it’s not necessarily my goal to stay in this space.”
At the LA premiere for Joker: Folie à Deux, Todd Phillips indicated that this second Joker film is his last project related to DC.
When asked about plans for a spin-off film featuring Harley Quinn, Phillips denied any such plans and mentioned that he feels his work in the DC Universe is done with the two Joker films.
It is important to note that Todd Phillips has changed his mind about continuing Arthur’s story before. Initially, he did not want to make another Joker film after the first one, viewing it as a standalone project.
However, due to its unprecedented box office success and positive fan reactions, Joker: Folie à Deux was eventually created.
Given this, it is quite possible a sequel to Joker: Folie à Deux could happen if its box office results are even somewhat similar to those of its predecessor.
