*SPOILER ALERT*
Scream V is set up a whole twenty-five years after the original Scream, or as it is mentioned in the movies, Stab was released. In this movie, we have a new supporting protagonist, Samantha Carpenter, preferably known as Sam had nothing mentioned about her in the earlier movies, and she is a completely new addition to the movie series.
But not for long, she has a deep connection to the original movie and carries out the thing, but it couldn’t have been guessed before, and thus no part of her existence was revealed until now. Sam is seen living in a part of California and working her job in Modesto, California, at Bolling Alley. She is twenty-four years old, right, and like any other individual, she has a secret that she hides from the world.
She gets to know that her sister Tara Carpenter who is fifteen in the movie, was attacked by the Ghostface Killer back in her hometown Woodsboro, and rushes to be back at the place with Richie, where she ran away from almost six years ago, and in the process abandoning her sister Tara and mother Catherine who had turned into an alcoholic by that point because her husband had left her. Now, how is this connected to the original Scream movie, you might ask, because all Scream franchise movies have a connection between them and the original movie.
In this movie, we see, Billy Loomis making a re-entry. He, along with his friend Stu was the original Ghostface Killers, and he is even played by the actor Skeet Ulrich the one who played Billy’s part in the 1996 Scream movie.
Now, to clear any doubt, he is indeed very much dead, but a good villain leaves his mark even after being dead and that is exactly what Billy did. He was the reason this movie could happen, or as in the fictional world, the killings and the killer’s motivation were what Billy did. That is not all, though. The reason he reappears in Scream V is stated further on.
So, are Sam and Billy related?
The answer is, BOOM, YES! Billy was her biological father. The story goes like this when Sam is 13 years old, she discovers her mother, Catherine Carpenter’s diary, which she has maintained practically all her life. It also talks about how she got pregnant with a child and had to tell her husband that it was his and not tell the world that it was the child of the Ghostface Killer, Billy Loomis.
Billy was cheating on his then-girlfriend Sidney Prescott or at least cheated once. Because that is how Samantha was conceived, this news came as an extreme shock to Sam. Her legal father and Catherine’s husband discovered this fact, too, and ended up abandoning all three of them. Leading to her acting out from then on, not being herself, and submerging into drugs and substance abuse.
By the time she reached the legal age of eighteen years old, she had decided that her hometown had nothing left for her, and she decided to run away from her home. Even now, there are times though, that she has illusions of the kind where she sees Billy in his classic white shirt and thinks that he is trying to talk to her.
He is seen constantly telling her not to run away from who she is. Sam is stuck in a dilemma where she thinks she is the same as her father, with serial killer tendencies that are just waiting to show up and take upon her being. Even her paternal turned out to be a killer.
She fears she will too. But right now, she needs to go and save her sister Tara who is behind her back. She tells Tara everything about why and what she did. Tara does not see reason in it and wants Sam to leave her alone. But Sam is determined to save her sister. With the help of past survivors Sidney Prescott, Dewey Riley, and Gale Weathers, she tries to solve the case and find out who the Ghostface Killer is. During the process, a lot of people lose their lives, obviously, and the gory details of it all are shown throughout the movie, which it is famous for.
Throughout the movie, we can see Billy showing up in front of Sam in the form of illusions, sometimes provoking her and sometimes thoughtful. Working through the movie, it is quickly determined by all the people that the Ghostface Killer is trying to kill everyone involved in the original Woodboro killings trying to create a requel. A requel means a sequel to the original Stab movie and also trying to re-create it at the same time.
She is warned by the survivors of the rules in the franchise movie that the killer is from the friends group itself and that the love interests cannot be trusted. The dots are connected furthermore as Sam’s connection to Billy is established. To keep Tara safe, Sam decides to take her out of the town, and she is warned by the previous survivors that it won’t help because the killer will follow them wherever they go.
Towards the end, as more people get killed, only Gale, Sidney, and Sam are left trapped in the kitchen with the killers, and it becomes apparent that Amber and Richie are the killers after Amber kills off Liz and Richie tries to kill Sam. Sam has another illusion where she sees Billy as he guides her to find a knife and kill off Richie by stabbing him in the head because that is the only way to finish off Ghostface Killer so that they cannot come back.
The reason why Richie and Amber had decided to kill everyone off and, in the way, followed in Stab is because they wanted to show off their love for the movie series and wanted to show themselves up as super-fans.
They had met on Reddit and deliberately planned all of the events and killings, killing anyone with a connection off to show that no one would be spared. Richie also says he intentionally came close to Sam with specific intentions in mind. As the movie comes to an end, the relationship between the two sisters seems to be a bit clearer, but awkwardness lies.
