Ann Turner’s Irresistible is a mystery thriller starring Emily Blunt and Susan Sarandon in the main roles. This 103-minute-long movie made it to theatres in the US by April 2006. Irresistible’s storyline centers on Sophie, whose life is chaotic after meeting her husband’s coworker.
Sophie’s a well-known illustrator who’s busy making beautiful paintings for an upcoming book and lives with her husband and two daughters. After returning home one day, Sophie feels uneasy about being watched, which seems to get more obvious with time.
With signs of who it is here and there, Sophie assumes it’s Mara, Craig’s new coworker. However, confirming her suspicions won’t be an easy task as there seems to be a much more complex story behind the mysterious occurrences.
Aside from Susan Sarandon as Sophie and Emily Blunt in the role of Mara, the cast of Irresistible consists of Sam Neill in the role of Craig Singleton, Charles Tingwell playing Sam, William Mcinnes playing Jimmy, and Alethea McGrath stars in the role of Maggie.
Irresistible: What Happens In The Film?
In the beginning, we see Sophie dropping Ruby and Elly off at school. Midway, she remembers that she forgot to turn off the iron, so she hurriedly returns to the house only to see that the iron is hot but turned off. Sophie forgets it and moves on to her next painting project.
Another time, Sophie and her daughter Elly feel like someone is in the house, but after finding no one, they just dismiss the feeling. Craig loses his house keys, so Sophie has to go out and pick him up. She later returns to her house and sees that her new painting has been damaged by ink.
Craig and Sophie attend a party, and that’s where Sophie meets Mara. Both of them go to a quieter place and talk about their lives. Mara asks about Sophie’s recently deceased mom and talks about her best friend Kate, who had passed away tragically in Kosovo. Kate was an aid worker who died saving children from a fire.
After returning home, Sophie sees many things missing from her house each day. This includes her Hibiscus dress, her daughter’s toy, and many of her pictures from her scrapbook. Sophie’s suspicion shifts to Mara after seeing her wear a similar Hibiscus dress.
Moreover, Mara had helped Craig bring in an Owl sculpture that was filled with wasps. Soon, Sophie starts to think she’s going crazy, so she goes to stay at a cabin away from her family. She calls Craig to check up on him later and hears Mara pick up.
This causes Sophie to assume Craig is cheating on her with Mara, but he denies it. While out on a trip with her dad, Sophie talks to him about the child she had at 18, who was taken away from her by her parents. After being caught in Mara’s home, Sophie has a restraining order.
When her cat Ginger goes missing, Sophie goes to Mara’s house to check if he’s there but somehow gets trapped in her basement. She tries to find things to help her escape, but Sophie instead finds evidence suggesting that Mara could be the daughter she abandoned years ago.
Irresistible 2006 Movie: Ending Explained
After noticing Sophie through the kitchen’s vents, Mara comes into the basement. Now that Mara could be her daughter, Sophie tries to make conversation. Mara starts a fire; Sophie tries to run away and pushes her into the fire, but her motherly instincts kick in, and she goes ahead and saves Mara.
When things get calmer, Sophie visits Mara at the hospital to ask her permission to include her in her upcoming book. Following a wholesome mother-daughter moment, Sophie promises to never leave Mara alone again.
In a surprising twist, we see that Mara isn’t even Sophie’s real daughter. Kate Crotic, the aid worker killed in the fire in Kosovo, looked exactly like Sophie after she grew up. Mara has a flashback to when Kate told her she could share anything of hers. So now, Mara just straight-up adopts her identity and family.
The ending was unexpected and shocking, but seeing the way Mara was ready to kill Sophie, it’s believable. No real daughter would want to kill their biological mother for not caring about them. Mara blamed Sophie for Kate ending up in the fire and passing away and wanted her to have the same fate.
Sophie assumed Mara was her daughter, and Mara didn’t know how to react to it, but when Sophie came to the hospital to apologize to her, Mara had already made up her mind.
Sophie is oblivious to the truth, but since she’s guilty, all Sophie wants is to have a future with her daughter in it. The fact that Craig and Mara almost got intimate is something Sophie should have known. If she knew what happened, Sophie probably wouldn’t have made Mara a part of her family.
With the way she’s insane enough to do all of this, it’s not hard to believe that Mara could have gotten jealous that Kate had a mother and was the one to throw the Molotov. However, it’s just an assumption & Mara probably just wanted Sophie to suffer for rejecting Kate.
Irresistible 2006, in the end, was a movie that strongly focused on manipulation and deception. Mara’s way of cleverly coming into Sophie’s life, along with Sophie eventually losing her grip on reality, makes Irresistible an interesting film packed with suspense and great acting.
