Insomniac Senior Project Director Confirms Marvel’s Wolverine Will Be Fully Playable From the PS5 Disc at Launch

Marvel’s Wolverine will be fully playable directly from its PS5 disc when it launches on September 16, Insomniac Games has confirmed. The clarification comes at an important time for physical-game collectors, following Sony’s announcement that it will stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games beginning in January 2028.

The upcoming Insomniac title will therefore arrive during the final period in which new PlayStation games are still being released on physical media. Sony has confirmed that games released before January 2028 will not be affected by the change, meaning existing physical releases will remain playable.

Marvel’s Wolverine Disc Will Contain the Full Game

Speaking with Eurogamer, Insomniac senior project director Jess Reiner-Reed confirmed that Marvel’s Wolverine will ship in both physical and digital formats and that the game will be playable from the disc without requiring a day-one download.

However, Insomniac is still encouraging players to install the game’s launch update. Reiner-Reed explained that the team will continue working on polishing the game and fixing bugs before release, meaning the day-one patch will provide additional improvements beyond what is contained on the physical disc.

Insomniac head of technology Mike Fitzgerald emphasized the studio’s approach to the final months of development, saying, “We’re perfectionists.” He explained that the team intends to use every available moment before launch to make the game better, with players who download the update receiving those additional refinements.

The confirmation makes Marvel’s Wolverine particularly notable for players who prefer owning complete games on physical media. While a launch update is recommended for the best experience, the base game itself will reportedly be present on the PS5 disc.

Sony’s decision to end physical production means the release also arrives during a significant transition for PlayStation. From January 2028, Sony says new games will be sold digitally through the PlayStation Store and retailers, while games released before that date can continue to be available and played on disc.
