Five years after the events of Knocked Up, Debbie now owns a shop and employs Desi and Jodi. Ronnie and Cat, two of Pete’s friends, work for his record company, which he owns. As Pete promotes the reuniting of Graham Parker & The Rumour, his firm has financial difficulties. The couple also had to deal with their kids, eight-year-old Charlotte and Sadie, a young adolescent. The couple spends a romantic weekend at a resort celebrating Debbie’s 40th birthday. After indulging in marijuana cookies, they openly dream about killing each other.
Debbie Wants A Better Marriage
Debbie decides to strengthen her marriage and family through fitness and closer ties with her father after talking to her friends Jason and Barb. She advises Pete to avoid lending money to his father, Larry because it harms their finances. Pete goes to see him but cannot inform him of the news; yet, he agrees to tell him more. While this is going on, Debbie decides not to tell Pete about her pregnancy when she sees her doctor. Later, she screams at Joseph, a fellow student who had been making fun of Sadie. So much so that Pete and Pete’s mother, Catherine, argue.
Who’s Stealing Money At Debbie’s Store?
Debbie takes Desi out for partying and dancing at a club one night in between the school, taunting scenes to confront Desi about her alleged theft of cash from the shop. Debbie and Desi run across several of the hockey team’s Philadelphia Flyers players. One of the players wants to hang out with Debbie and maybe have a sexual relationship with her, and Debbie leans awkwardly. She acknowledges that she is married, has two children, and is pregnant, but he is proud that he wants to have sex with her. After dropping her off at her residence, Debbie finally confronts Desi about the missing money. Desi explains that she can buy lovely things because she works as an escort.
Jodi reveals to Debbie when they later cross paths that she took the cash to purchase Oxycontin. She dismisses her and goes out. Pete and Debbie must deal with Sadie and Charlotte’s constant arguing, which causes conflicts within the family. When they later had to meet with the principal, the pair insists they did nothing of the sort that Catherine accuses them of. When she begins using the same derogatory language they had previously used, the principal dismisses the pair, much to their delight.
The Birthday Party Crash
They dispute the money Pete’s father wants from them at his 40th birthday party. Debbie debates with her father about how his life is ideal and how he doesn’t spend enough time in hers. Oliver explains that despite his imperfect life, he has always loved and cared for her. Later, Pete hears Debbie discussing her pregnancy and leaves the house on his bicycle in a furious manner. After realizing that he had cycled into a car door, Debbie and Larry left. During their altercation, Pete is punched in the stomach by the car’s driver.
While driving Pete to the hospital, Debbie and Larry make up, with Larry acknowledging that Debbie is the family’s fighter and is the reason the family has been able to stay together. Later, when Pete and Debbie chat, he admits that he’s excited about having a third child and doesn’t feel stuck, so they make up. Later, Pete and Debbie are enjoying a little concert with Ryan Adams. They want to speak with him once they finish watching the show, and she advises that he sign him to his label.
