Well, the South Korean drama series Squid Game did exceptionally well amongst the audience, and seeing it, a similar British reality series titled ” Squid Game: The Challenge” was released this fall season by Netflix for viewers to watch.
The reality series made a place for itself in the viewer’s heart the moment it was released by the streaming giant, with the audience rooting for their favorite player to walk out with the cash.
Released on 22 November 2023 the reality series has Phill Cian, Sam Lantz, Mai Whelan, Hallie Parrott, Ashley Tolbert, Trey Plutnicki, Bianca ‘Bee’ Sarafian, Purna Biswa, Mikie Bowe, T.J. Stukes, Dylan Scanlon, LeAnn Wilcox Plutnicki, Phalisia Boothe, Charlise Chaney, Alexis Dali, Megan Allen, Amber N. Bell, Yu Hannah Kim, and several others participating in hopes of winning the money at the end.
The ongoing reality series is based on Squid Game, the South Korean drama series by Hwang Dong-hyuk, and follows a similar pattern to the original one, where 456 players participate in the game in hopes of winning $4.56 M that broke the original award prize of $2,600,000.
The game reality series has several different types of challenges that push each player to their limits, forcing them to question their strength and the limit to which they will go to win the prize.
By the end of each game round, some of the players were eliminated from the show after getting shot on the dye packs on their backpacks, and during the first two rounds of the show, 337 contestants were eliminated from the show, thus only allowing 119 contestants to participate and appear in the third episode.
The game-reality series became one of the most-watched shows on Netflix on a global level, receiving a mixed reaction from the audience, with some feeling that the show is an excellent binge and others feeling that it is nowhere near the original one.
Premise
The reality series started with a bang as it introduced the contestants and picked some of the contestants up before the scene cut to masked guards getting ready for the game at the site where the challenges are going to take place, with the set being almost identical to the first one.
The series has 456 players competing to win the set prize money of $4.56 M, and through players’ interviews, the audience meets Starla, who is a probation officer with hopes of making her debts go away and making her dreams turn into a reality.
After Sharla’s introduction, the scene cuts to the players’ arrival on stage, where they have to play their first game. We get to know that some of the players have come up with a plan and strategy while others are hoping to go with the flow.
Next, we are introduced to a mother-son duo, Trey and Leann, who are unsure about the future but hope for things to turn around and be better for either of them. We are introduced to another player, Stephen, who joined the game show to battle it out with Chase, his best friend.
After the game begins, Chase and Starla become the first players to be sent home, thus saying goodbye to their dream of winning the cash prize, but after the pressure and pain increase in the game, some players decide to give up.
The players start to bond over surviving the first challenge after they return to their quarters and go to sleep peacefully after choosing their beds. The guards arrive in the room to announce something, following which the transparent money sphere is lowered, and the remaining players cheer while money gets loaded in the sphere, with $10,000 being added to the bowl for every player who loses.
The next day, the players are informed about a challenge waiting for them at the dorm, and winning might allow the player to eliminate someone else from the remaining players, which leaves the players excited to see what comes next.
On the second day, the players start to ally, and Bryton becomes the target for every other contestant as he rubbed them the wrong way since they entered the show and Lorenzo becomes the second player to be on the target list after he took two meals and broke the rules of the game.
One player to make a place for himself in other people’s hearts is Ricky. He is the oldest one there, participating in hopes of helping someone win the money, but what broke everyone’s heart was Mothi being eliminated from the show after some players decided to eliminate him given the choice.
The same pattern continues with the players competing in different challenges and some of them getting eliminated after they fail to complete the challenge with the latest challenge including the players being blindfolded with one of the players being taped before another player places a gift box on the chair and the blindfolded person will have to guess who the person was and they were eliminated after they fail to guess the right answer.
