Perhaps Love: The Plot
The movie is about a best-selling author who has been a writer for quite some time, but despite his well-established career, he has not released a single book or even written one for the past seven years. We are told that Kim Hyeon has been going through a rough period of writer’s block, which has thrown him into a neverending cycle of slump.
He attempts to write a new book to finally put an end to his problems, but that does not seem to be working all that well for him. The movie also reveals that Kim Hyeon has an ex-wife, and the two even have a teenage son together. His relationship with his ex-wife, despite their divorce, is not all that bad, and the two seem to have gone through their issues like grown adults.
After his divorce, Hyeon got remarried another, and they also have a kid together, but both of them are revealed to be living abroad, away from Hyeon. So it is not like the man has deliberately isolated himself; he has family, and they just do not live with him. Not having anybody around to talk to and share his problems with has, obviously, made him lonely, and it has not helped with his block either.
But things change for the better for Hyeon when he is asked to give a lecture to aspiring writers at a university. After his lecture, he ends up coming across one of the student’s writings, and it impresses him so much it makes him want to work and write a book with the college kid. Considering it an honor, the student, Yoo Jin, agrees, and by the time the two would collaborate and come up with a book, Hyeon invites Yoo Jin to live and move in with him.
This is not much of a problem for Hyeon, considering his house is empty anyways, but it is during the time Hyeon shares his house with Yoo Jin that the latter starts feeling very specific emotions for the house owner. The young kid ends up developing feelings for the writer and is forced to face and deal with them, all the while living with the man he ended up falling in love with.
The film, on its surface level, is a light-hearted romance that has a witty screenplay and the right amount of humor, but underneath these layers, it deals with matters that are very relevant in people’s actual lives, be it the writer’s block or realizing that one is not really straight, or even the fact the person one has fallen in love with is married and is much older in age.
