Not Okay Plot
Aspiring author Danni Sanders currently works as the photo editor for the online publication Depravity in New York City. Danni, who is having trouble with both her job and establishing friends, pretends to be going to a retreat that will be held in Paris in order to impress her coworker Colin, a social media influencer. The following week, Danni spent her time in her Brooklyn apartment sharing photoshopped photos of herself in Paris.
As a result, she obtains a moderate Instagram following that includes Colin. Only minutes before numerous significant Parisian sites, including the Arc de Triomphe, are bombed by terrorists, Danni shares a doctored photo of herself by the Arc de Triomphe a few days later. In order to support her fabrication, Danni poses as a witness to the attack, pretends to be returning from Paris, and meets her parents at the airport.

The Rise
Danni instantly attracts a lot of attention and sympathy after convincing her parents, coworkers, and online followers that she survived the terrorist strikes. As a result, Danni leans into the deception. She meets and befriends teen anti-gun activist Rowan Aldren, a school shooting survivor with a sizable social media following, after going to a trauma support group. Danni creates a piece about her “experience” of being in a terrorist attack after being inspired by Rowan. With Rowan’s assistance, this article, which uses the hashtag #IAmNotOkay, gained a lot of attention and made Danni famous. Rowan and Danni get closer, with Danni serving as her confidante and sister. When Danni and Colin are invited to a party, they have a brief sexual encounter that is uncomfortable for Danni. It helps her realize that living a happy life is preferable to having the life of fame she had imagined.
The Fall
Rowan asks Danni to join him in speaking at a rally. Rowan has a panic attack and is hospitalized after counter-protesters throw off fireworks. Danni, who has been experiencing recurrent hallucinations of the Paris bomber, is feeling more and more bad about lying to Rowan. Danni’s skeptical coworker Harper discovers her deception in the meantime, and Harper gives Danni a choice: either she confesses on her own terms, or Harper will expose the fraud. Danni makes the decision to issue a brief apology outlining the truth and pledging to make amends. Her life swiftly spirals out of control as a result; she loses her job, is rejected by Rowan, moves in with her folks after her address leaks online, faces real-world harassment and death threats, and she deactivates all of her social media accounts.
The Aftermath
Danni is attending a support group for those who have experienced internet shaming a month later, where she is urged to make apologies to those she wronged. Rowan shares her account of how Danni took advantage of her during a spoken word event, impressing Danni and drawing applause from the audience. Danni discreetly leaves the theater after understanding that making amends would be for her benefit more than for Rowan’s.
