Little Women Plot
A teacher in New York City named Jo March visits Mr. Dashwood 1868, who is an editor and agrees to publish a narrative she has written. Her youngest sister Amy joins their neighbor and childhood friend Laurie at a party when they are visiting their aunt March in Paris. Due to Laurie’s intoxicated conduct, Amy becomes enraged, which causes him to make fun of her for spending time with affluent businessman Fred Vaughn. Jo is hurt in New York when Friedrich Bhaer, a professor interested in her, criticizes her writing and makes her angry. Jo comes to Concord, Massachusetts, after learning from a letter that her younger sister Beth’s condition has worsened.
Jo met Laurie seven years previously when out with her older sister Meg at a party. The girl’s mother, “Marmee,” convinces them to offer their breakfast to their needy neighbor Mrs. Hummel and her malnourished children on Christmas morning. When they get home, they discover a table piled high with food that their neighbor and Laurie’s grandfather, Mr. Laurence, had brought to them. Then Marmee reads a letter their father wrote while serving in the American Civil War. Jo frequently reads to Aunt March, hoping she may extend an invitation to visit Europe.

Amy’s Envy
An envious Amy burns Jo’s manuscripts when Meg, Jo, Laurie, and John—tutor Laurie’s and Meg’s future husband—go to the theater. The following morning, Amy pursues Laurie and Jo onto a lake where they are skating because she wants Jo to forgive her for being unhappy. When Amy slips through the ice, they catch her. When Beth becomes silent, Mr. Laurence notices and offers her to play the piano that belonged to his late daughter. Meg confesses her dissatisfaction with being poor to John as they sit down together in the present after Meg purchases expensive cloth they can’t afford. To make one for his actions, Laurie visits Amy and implores her to wed him rather than Fred. Amy, who is in love with Laurie, rejects him out of frustration over always coming in second to Jo. Despite this, she declines Fred’s offer as well.
Aunt March
When Mr. Laurence gives his piano to Beth in the past, he learns that the Hummels are to blame for her scarlet fever. Amy is sent to spend time with Aunt March to stay healthy, and she gives her advice to marry well to support her family. John implores Meg to make a dress out of the fabric right once to make her happy, but she admits she had sold it and assures him that she is content being his wife. In the past, Beth gets better in time for Christmas, and their father also comes home. Beth passes away after getting sicker in the present. Jo tries to persuade Meg to flee on her wedding day in the past, but Meg declares her joy at marrying John. Aunt March reveals that she will travel to Europe with Amy rather than Jo. Jo rejects Laurie’s marriage proposal after the ceremony and says she doesn’t see herself marrying.
Jo’s Reasons
Marmee says that Amy is currently traveling back from Europe with an ailing Aunt March. Jo sends Laurie a note after questioning whether she was too fast to reject him. Amy informs Laurie she declined Fred’s marriage proposal as she gets ready to leave; they subsequently share a kiss and are married while traveling home. Jo discards the letter she wrote to Laurie when they decide to stay friends. Jo starts to write a book about her life and the lives of her sisters, and she sends the first chapters to Mr. Dashwood, who is not impressed. Bhaer unexpectedly shows up at the March residence while traveling to California, surprising Jo.
After his daughters in New York demand to know how Jo’s book ends, Mr. Dashwood agrees to publish it. Still, he won’t accept the protagonist being single at the conclusion. To placate him, Jo has the main character, Bhaer, stop her from departing for California in the book’s conclusion. With Mr. Dashwood, she negotiates copyright and royalties with success. Aunt March passes away, and Jo acquires her home. She turns it into a school, employing Meg, Amy, and Bhaer as teachers. Jo watches as her book, Little Women, is printed.
