Growing up as a first-generation immigrant who learned English at Malcolm X Elementary through hip-hop, I was raised in a bilingual environment, speaking Spanish at home and English at school. Barili disclosed in a statement that she is the project’s co-creator, executive producer, and host.
“I was influenced just as much by Calle 13 and El General as I was by E-40 and Outkast,” he continued. De La Calle was established with the goal of examining the manner in which Spain and Latin America harbor the same street seeds that gave life to hip-hop.
I’m thrilled to be collaborating with MTV Studios and Paramount+ to show De La Calle to a worldwide audience after visiting the towns where El Movimiento originated, chatting with the pioneers who were there, and learning about the pasts of the biggest stars of today and the future.
In order to address the contentious subject, “Were Latinos co-founders of hip-hop?” Nick investigates the origins of the genre. A couple of the top Latinos in hip-hop are Fat Joe and Cardi B. However, it didn’t begin there. Nick explores how deeply ingrained Latinos and Latinas have been in all four aspects of hip-hop since its inception, from breakdancing to DJing.
Nick travels to Panama, the birthplace of the Panama Canal, Reggae en Español—the undisputed progenitor of Reggaeton—and global icon Sech. Through his interactions, he gains more knowledge about Panama’s contributions to the global urban music industry.
Reggaeton is sweeping the globe as a popular craze. Reggaeton, however, wasn’t always accepted. Artists in this genre were formerly considered criminals. Nick visits Puerto Rico to examine the development of reggaeton there.
