Apple TV+ just came out with its recent crime thriller series titled City On Fire, a show that opens with the mysterious death of a girl causing many secrets of the natives of the town to come out to the public. The show has been made under the direction of Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, who have been famously involved in making another loved show, The Gossip Girl.
The series is said to have been inspired by a novel of the same name written by the author Garth Risk Hallberg and just recently released its first episode on May 12th, 2023. The show City On Fire has cast actress Jemima Kirke for Regan Hamilton Sweeney, Wyatt Oleff to play Charlie, Chase Sui Wonders plays the dead Samantha Yeung, and Kathleen Munroe has been cast for Detective PJ McFadden. The show has a long list of supporting cast and guest appearances.
The show is set in 2003 and opens with the death of a university student shot dead for reasons unknown. The episodes of the show are set to divulge Samantha’s murder case alongside how it ended up connecting with several unexplained events taking place all over the town, like the random fires around town along with the music from downtown, and at last, a filthy rich family living in the ‘good’ part of the town trying their best to keep the secrets from coming out into the world.
While it has not been all that long since the show was released, the audience has wasted no time in expressing what a letdown the series and its plot, or the lack of it, was. The cast received praise for trying their best to make do with their bland characters, but overall the show failed to be an interesting murder-mystery show.
Though the show seems to be full to the brim with great background soundtracks and cinematography, it still struggles because of its bland screenwriting, one-dimensional characters, and an overall lacking plot and twists.
City On Fire: Plot
What ticks the story of the murder series City on Fire is just one student’s death, murder, to be accurate. Samantha Yeung is a college student at New York University whose life is put to an end on the fourth of July, 2003. Her murder turns out to be trickier and more complicated than anyone would expect.
We find that at the time of her murder, she was completely alone, with no other evidence except for the bullet that was put through her. We know that she was out alone because she was supposed to be meeting someone and that she had promised her friends, who were all there to see a band performing at a club downtown at the time, that she would be back in no time.
The lack of evidence brought in its own challenges, but very soon, revelations about Samantha’s connection to a variety of absurd happenings around town were made public. The strange town fires, the downtown club music events, and the secrets that one rich family in the town has been trying to keep protected all trace back to her.
