The structure of the reality series will be similar: Ramsay will split the 18 would-be cooks into two teams; the men and women will remain together until the very end, overcoming obstacles together in the hopes of finishing before being eliminated for little infractions.
The show reduces the number of would-be cooks from eighteen to twelve, then to one winner. The women are typically assigned to the red team, and the males to the blue team. Each chef is given a jacket with shoulder panels in the colour of their team.
Until Ramsay chooses to rearrange the team or transfer a team member to a different team for a variety of reasons, the players remain on the same team. Every Hell’s Kitchen episode starts with a challenge, moves into a dinner service, and ends with the chef who makes the least appetizing meal being eliminated.
When just five chefs—clad in black jackets with panels—remain in a single room, they must begin competing separately. Gordon Ramsay himself gives a cooking challenge to either the team or an individual during the difficult portion of the tournament.
Recap
Jason thought he was a strong contender, so he was optimistic about his chances as he presented his meal. Jason accompanied his roast filet mignon with crushed marble potatoes and carrots simmered in honey mustard. Ramsay questioned why Jason chopped the filet even though he liked the way it was cooked.
Ramsay stated that he faced the risk of bleeding out the flesh, that went into the steak, but Jason insisted that he needed it to work for his presentation. While conceding the tweaks he could have made, Jason maintained that he knew what he was doing and that Atoye knew that carving a filet was meant for the guests only.
When Atoye stood up, she wanted to give Ramsay a taste of the love she put into her dish, so she served her filet mignon basted with thyme and habanero sauce and mashed parsnips and leeks. Atoye was like a mid-rare temperature, but the parsnip was gritty. Nevertheless, Ramsay declared the filet to be perfect, giving Atoye hope for the best.
Jason was crowned the first safe chef by Ramsay after he tasted two dishes, deeming his dish to be the more comprehensive. Jason remarked that winning the challenge proved he was a capable cook and that he had no qualms about his safety.
Jason let the guys know he was coming for them as soon as he got back to the dorms. Sandra was the next to present her meal, and although she was confident in it, she was anxious. Sandra did a wonderful job of cooking her filet with wild mushrooms and horseradish, but Ramsay did not get the garnish because it tasted more like ragu.
Ramsay nevertheless declared that Sandra’s meal was superior to Atoye’s and ordered the latter to retreat. Sandra was happy to be alive, but she also knew that the next day would be quite different. Devon, the last chef to serve, showcased his filet mignon basted with butter and herbs accompanied by a chive pomme puree.
Ramsay, in the meantime, encouraged Devon to pursue his dreams and that he respected his tenacity. Devon expressed disappointment at his exit interview and realized that self-doubt was ultimately what ultimately brought him down.
