Ketchup Entertainment has shown the first trailer for the new Hellboy movie, Hellboy: The Crooked Man. This film leans more into horror compared to the earlier, more fantasy-focused movies.
The trailer was revealed at the San Diego Comic Con, following a teaser that hinted at the franchise’s new direction. San Diego Comic Con was the perfect place to showcase this change, as the audience there is open to creative changes.
Brian Taylor directs Hellboy: The Crooked Man, with the script co-written by series creator Mike Mignola. The movie stars Jack Kesy as Hellboy.
This is the fourth live-action adaptation of the Hellboy comics, and it appears to be smaller in scale, both in production and star power. Despite this, Taylor has said the movie will use practical effects rather than computer-generated imagery.
This is the Hellboy comics’ fourth live-action adaptation
The Hellboy series was first adapted for live-action by Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro, who directed two movies between 2004 and 2008. The first Hellboy movie, starring Ron Perlman, made just under $100 million worldwide on a $65 million budget.
Though not a huge hit, it did well enough on home video to lead to a sequel. Del Toro’s sequel, Hellboy: The Golden Army, made nearly $170 million worldwide on an $80 million budget. Perlman also played Hellboy in two straight-to-DVD animated movies.
The series was rebooted in 2019 with a movie directed by Neil Marshall and starring David Harbour from Stranger Things.
This film faced many problems during production and received poor reviews, grossing only $55 million and scoring just 17% on Rotten Tomatoes. In comparison, del Toro’s movies scored 81% and 86% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Hellboy: The Crooked Man also stars Jefferson White, Adeline Rudolph, Martin Bassindale, and Joseph Marcell, and will be released on a date yet to be announced. Stay tuned to Otakukart for more updates.
