The DC movies are certainly getting all the attention when it comes to the OTT side of things. So far, the Max Originals are a treat and always something to look at. While there are already some DC projects on their way to the platform. HBO Max is adding another one to the list as the news suggests it’s developing a live-action series on the origin story of the Jackson “Jake” Hyde, aka Aqualad.
So far, only one big name is attached to the project. It’s Charlize Theron, who is executive producing the new DC show alongside Ben Kono, A.J. Dix, and Andrew Haas of Denver & Delilah Films, with Warner Bros. producing it much like every DC Project.
Coming to the storyline of the film. The new HBO Max series on Aqualad will be taking inspiration from the YA graphic novel “You Brought Me the Ocean”. Originally it tells the story of Jackson Hyde as a gay teenager living in New Mexico. As he navigates his teenage life, falling for a classmate. He also looks forward to moving away from the desert to explore his attraction toward the ocean. From there on, slowly and steadily he starts acknowledging his powers.
While Aqualad’s mantle has been picked up by many characters, Jackson Hyde’s was something special. The creators of Young Justice specifically introduced him to the series. Later on, Hyde went on to make his comic debut with Brightest Day #4. The coming HBO Max series will certainly mark the live-action debut of Jackson Hyde’s Aqualad.
Talking about Aqualad, another character named Garth, who had picked up the mantle, has already made his live-action debut with Max Original Titans. Where Jackson Hyde’s Aquaman fits in is still a question. He can be part of the DCEU with shows like Peacemaker or may follow in its own universe. After all, DC has already explored the possibilities of their own multi-verse, and the upcoming 2023’s The Flash may also change a lot of things.
