GTA 6 Didn’t Get a Traditional Gameplay Trailer Because Rockstar Says It’s “Extremely Tough” to Show Off

Rockstar Games took an unusual approach to showcasing Grand Theft Auto 6, choosing an Extended Look instead of the traditional narrated gameplay trailer used for GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2. According to Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson, the decision was largely driven by the sheer scale and variety of the upcoming open-world game.

The explanation comes after GTA 6’s Extended Look premiered on Netflix on August 27 before being released through Rockstar’s official channels. Captured entirely from PlayStation 5 gameplay, the presentation runs for nearly 27 minutes and gives players a broader look at Jason, Lucia, Vice City and the wider state of Leonida.

Rockstar Says GTA 6 Is Too Big for a Conventional Gameplay Trailer

Nelson’s comments were relayed following Kinda Funny’s extensive preview of GTA 6, during which Andy Cortez and Greg Miller spent time at Rockstar North and spoke with the development team. In the Kinda Funny discussion, Nelson explained that Rockstar did not want to simply repeat its previous narrated gameplay format because it had already been used before.

More importantly, Nelson described GTA 6 as an “extremely tough game to show off” because there are so many different things happening throughout the game. A conventional narrated trailer could have highlighted individual mechanics, but Rockstar evidently felt that approach would not properly communicate the scale of the overall experience.

That reasoning becomes easier to understand when looking at the Extended Look itself. Rather than concentrating on a single mission or explaining mechanics through narration, the footage jumps between characters, locations and situations, giving viewers a broader impression of how the world operates.

GTA 6’s Extended Look Shows Why Rockstar Chose a Different Format

The Extended Look includes Jason and Lucia during criminal operations, everyday activities and encounters across Vice City and Leonida. Rockstar has also emphasized the game’s numerous characters and locations, with the official website presenting everything from Vice City itself to areas beyond the city.

The presentation also reflects Rockstar’s desire to make GTA 6 feel more like a living world rather than a collection of isolated missions. Recent previews have highlighted systems involving police responses, vehicle theft, robberies, relationships and random events, further suggesting that there is far more happening beneath the surface than a traditional trailer could easily communicate.

Rockstar’s marketing strategy has also turned the Extended Look into a major event. The company premiered the presentation on Netflix before releasing it on YouTube and its official website, giving GTA 6 a presentation unlike previous entries in the franchise.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
