Fans eager to return to the Seven Kingdoms will have to wait a little longer, as PlaySide Studios has officially delayed Game of Thrones: War for Westeros to early 2027. Originally planned for a 2026 release, the upcoming real-time strategy game has been pushed back to give the development team more time to refine the experience and meet its quality goals.

The announcement was made through the game’s official development blog, where PlaySide assured players that development continues to progress well despite the delay. The studio emphasized that the decision was made to ensure the game launches in the best possible state rather than rushing to meet its original release window.

PlaySide explains why the release date has changed

In its update, the studio reaffirmed its commitment to creating an authentic strategy game set in George R.R. Martin’s iconic fantasy universe.

“We remain unwavering in our mission to deliver a real-time strategy game set in the world of Westeros that meets the expectations of both RTS players and Game of Thrones fans,”

PlaySide said. The developer added,

“This decision gives us the time needed to continue building towards that goal and ensure that the game reaches the high level of quality we are aiming for.”

The statement concluded by thanking fans for their patience, adding,

“We know the wait has been long, and we do not take your support for granted.”

First revealed during Summer Game Fest 2025, Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is a large-scale real-time strategy game that lets players command House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen, or the Night King’s Army of the Dead in battles for control of the Iron Throne. Each faction features legendary heroes with unique abilities that can level up and influence the outcome of battles.

PlaySide has also promised responsive unit controls, impactful large-scale combat, and a strong focus on battlefield immersion. According to the studio, significant development time has been dedicated to improving unit interactions and combat feedback to create a more visceral RTS experience.

While the delay may disappoint fans, it reflects a growing trend across the gaming industry, where developers are choosing to postpone major releases in favor of delivering more polished games at launch.
