Adam Wingard, the director behind Godzilla Vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire won’t be returning for the next installment in the MonsterVerse series due to scheduling conflicts, marking a surprising development for fans.
Despite stepping away, Wingard remains connected to the franchise, using the recent physical release of The New Empire to provide updates and insights.
In The New Empire, Godzilla and Kong briefly clash before teaming up against a new threat emerging from the depths of the Hollow Earth—the Skar King.
This sinister primate, a dark counterpart to Kong, rules with an iron fist and controls an albino kaiju named “Shimo.” This duo posed a formidable challenge, making The New Empire one of the most action-packed entries in the MonsterVerse.
During the commentary of the film’s physical release, Wingard shared additional details, revealing that Kong has moved beyond his rivalry with Godzilla and now restrains himself from causing unnecessary damage. Moreover, Kong has solidified his status as “King” by leading an army of apes once loyal to the Skar King.
Although Wingard departs, writer Dave Callaham, known for his work on Shang-Chi And The Legend of The Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, among others, is confirmed to be penning the script for the third MonsterVerse crossover film. His involvement promises to bring fresh perspectives to the ongoing clash between these iconic kaiju.
