Game Freak has offered fans their first official look at Pokémon Pokopia’s early development, releasing prototype footage that highlights how the Nintendo Switch 2 title evolved from its earliest concepts. Alongside the gameplay video, the studio also shared concept sketches and pages from the game’s original design documents, providing a rare look into the creative process.
According to director Shigeru Ohmori, development on the prototype began shortly after work wrapped on Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet.
“Initially, it was just three people working on it,”
Ohmori explained, referring to himself and two programmers before the team later expanded to five developers.
The early prototype centered on gameplay systems such as grass dynamically growing across the environment and Pokémon appearing from those locations. Ohmori also revealed that the team spent time debating Ditto’s transformation mechanics, discussing whether only its arms or its entire body should change during transformations.
The newly released footage also shows that the game’s protagonist was established from the beginning, although some story elements changed during development. In one notable example, players originally interacted with Tangela instead of Professor Tangrowth, demonstrating how the narrative evolved before release.
The prototype offers one of the most detailed looks yet at the development of Pokémon Pokopia, giving fans a better understanding of how the ambitious Nintendo Switch 2 adventure took shape.
