In the latest issue of Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine, it was revealed that Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe’s manga “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End” will be taking a break until mid-April, returning in the magazine’s 21st issue.
Viz Media has the rights to the manga and here’s a glimpse into its story:
“The adventure is over but life goes on for an elf mage just beginning to learn what living is all about. Elf mage Frieren and her courageous fellow adventurers have defeated the Demon King and brought peace to the land. But Frieren will long outlive the rest of her former party.
How will she come to understand what life means to the people around her? Decades after their victory, the funeral of one of her friends confronts Frieren with her near immortality.
Frieren sets out to fulfill the last wishes of her comrades and finds herself beginning a new adventure…”
“Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End” made its debut in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine back in April 2020. After a hiatus, it resumed serialization in March 2023.
Shogakukan has released the first 13 volumes of the manga, with the 13th volume slated for April 17.
Meanwhile, Viz Media published the 10th volume in English on February 20. The manga has gained considerable popularity, with circulation numbers surpassing 17 million copies, thanks in part to the success of its anime adaptation.
Not only has “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End” received critical acclaim, but it has also earned several awards and nominations.
These include the New Creator Prize at the 25th Annual Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize and the 14th Manga Taisho Award, both in 2021.
It has been nominated for Best Shōnen Manga at Kodansha’s Manga Awards and has even been recognized by the American Library Association’s Graphic Novels & Comics Round Table (GNCRT), earning a spot on its top 10 list of the 2022 Best Graphic Novels for Adults Reading List.
