In the latest season of Finding Your Roots With Henry Louis Gates Jr., three non-celebrity guests join the 18 celebrities who were selected for the show through a nationwide casting call.
With the help of renowned researcher Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., the tenth anniversary season of the groundbreaking Finding Your Roots series delves into the deep ancestral histories of the participants and resolves family mysteries.
With questions on Jeopardy!, Gates’s guest appearance on The Simpsons, mention on RuPaul’s Drag Race as RuPaul had his newly discovered cousin Cory Booker appear, inclusions on scripted shows like Watchmen and And Just Like That, and numerous celebrity press mentions of the series’ impact, the show has recently become part of the mainstream cultural zeitgeist.
The highly regarded show keeps using the most recent DNA technology in conjunction with genealogical detective work to assist new guests in learning about their family’s past. This often involves providing answers to questions that have been unanswered for decades, solving mysteries, sharing tales of unidentified ancestors, and occasionally improving a guest’s life.
Host and executive producer Henry Louis Gates, Jr., the director of Harvard University’s Hutchins Centre for African & African American Research and an Alphonse Fletcher University professor, is at the center of it all, driving every discovery.
According to Gates, the intimate tales of our guests and their ancestors symbolize the bond we share with PBS and our viewers to tell stories that explore the fullness and diversity of humanity.
“This season, we’ve uncovered some particularly intriguing family trees that are packed with surprises and lessons passed down from one generation to the next. For all of us who work on the show, getting it on public television is a huge privilege. Even after all these years, I’m still in awe of the discoveries we make that show us how interconnected we really are in different ways.
