Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will receive a physical release when it launches in 2027, but players who prefer owning a boxed copy will still need an internet connection before they can play. Square Enix has confirmed that additional game data must be downloaded for the physical version, marking a notable change from the previous two entries in the remake project.
The third and final game in the Final Fantasy 7 remake project is scheduled to launch worldwide on April 8, 2027, across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. Square Enix’s official product information confirms that physical editions will be available, including Deluxe and Collector’s Editions.
Physical Copies Will Not Contain Everything Needed to Play
Square Enix states that an internet connection will be required to download additional game data before the physical version of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation can be played. The company has not yet clarified how much of the game will be stored on the PS5 and Xbox discs, meaning the final download size for those versions remains unknown.

The situation is clearer on Nintendo Switch 2. The physical Switch 2 release will use Nintendo’s game-key card format, which means the card itself does not contain the full game. Nintendo explains that these cards function as a key for downloading the complete software through an internet connection, after which the card must remain inserted to launch the game.
Square Enix’s current store listing also confirms that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is being positioned as the largest chapter in the remake project, with players able to explore a much broader world using the Highwind airship. Cloud and his companions will also face the final confrontation with Sephiroth, while new playable characters and expanded combat systems are part of the game’s features.
The requirement is likely to attract attention from physical-media collectors, particularly because the previous Final Fantasy 7 Remake games shipped with their main content on physical discs. With Revelation targeting multiple platforms simultaneously, players choosing a physical copy should therefore be prepared for an initial download before beginning the final chapter.
