Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will receive two story DLCs after launch, but director Naoki Hamaguchi has revealed that the expansions were not part of Square Enix’s original plans. Instead, the decision came after fans and media repeatedly asked whether the final chapter of the remake trilogy would receive additional story content.
Speaking with RPG Site, Hamaguchi explained that the DLC plans are
“very recent developments.”
He also stressed that the development team is currently concentrating on completing the main game rather than planning additional expansions.
Fan demand changed Square Enix’s DLC plans
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation was announced as the conclusion to the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, following Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. After its reveal at Summer Game Fest 2026, Hamaguchi said fans and media members began asking whether Square Enix intended to continue supporting the game with DLC.
“We originally didn’t make that decision to have these two story DLCs for Revelation until only recently,”
Hamaguchi told RPG Site. He added that the team’s “full focus” remains on developing the main game and that it does not currently have the capacity to consider anything beyond the two announced expansions.
The two planned expansions are Sephiroth and Vincent & the Turks. Square Enix has scheduled them for release between Winter 2027 and Spring 2028, meaning players will have to wait considerably longer for the additional stories after Revelation launches. The Story Expansion Pass is included with select premium editions and will also be sold separately.
Hamaguchi has also clarified that players will not need the DLC to understand or complete the main story. In an interview with DualShockers, the director said the expansions are designed to provide more insight into Sephiroth and Vincent rather than alter the conclusion of the trilogy.
“You don’t need the DLC in order to fully experience the tale we’re trying to tell here,”
Hamaguchi explained. He added that the expansions could change how players view the characters, but
“it was never with the intent of rewriting the ending.”
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is scheduled to launch on April 8, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Square Enix describes it as the final chapter of the remake project, with Cloud and his companions facing Sephiroth and the threat to the planet.
