In a time when people want things quickly, fans of Doctor Who are eager for more content. Season 1 of Doctor Who on Disney+ ended earlier this year, but fans can still look forward to seeing Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor this Christmas in the special episode “Joy to the World,” where he stars alongside Nicola Coughlan from Bridgerton.
Season 2 of the series also finished filming earlier this year, but despite all the upcoming Doctor Who content, fans are still asking: when will we hear about Season 3?
In a new issue of SFX magazine, available on September 4, showrunner Russell T. Davies provides an update. “It’s an industry decision, like any business – these things take time,” Davies says. “I think the decision will come after the transmission of season two.
That’s what we’re expecting, that’s what we’ve always been heading towards.” Based on this, it seems Davies always knew that news about Season 3 would not come until after Season 2 aired. This approach aligns with the fact that Disney initially ordered two seasons, so the possibility of a third depends on how well the first two seasons do.
What’s Next for Doctor Who?
Former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat is returning to write the 2024 Christmas special “Joy to the World”. This special will explore what the Doctor is like when he’s alone, even though his wife has repeatedly warned him not to travel alone!
After saying goodbye to Millie Gibson’s Ruby Sunday at the end of Season 1, the Doctor will meet Nicola Coughlan’s character, Joy. In an interview with Ireland AM, Moffat said, “Nicola is wonderful in it, she will break your heart.”
Regarding the special itself, Moffat mentioned in a YouTube behind-the-scenes video, “it’s mad, it’s one of the maddest Christmas specials you’ll ever see. It’s epic, it goes to so many different places. And it’s a great story of who the Doctor is when he’s alone.”
As for Season 2 of Doctor Who, which is expected next year, fans will be introduced to a new companion joining the Doctor on his adventures. It was confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con that Varada Sethu would join Season 2 as a new character named Belinda Chandra.
Sethu previously appeared in the Season 1 episode “Boom” as Mundy Flynn, but it hasn’t been confirmed if the two characters are connected. Millie Gibson is also expected to return as Ruby Sunday, and she will be joined by Jonah Hauer-King from The Little Mermaid.
When Davies addressed rumors about Gibson’s departure after just one season, he also revealed that her story arc would continue into the next season.
Fans have already learned about Ruby’s parentage, which had a mixed reception, but it will be interesting to see which parts of her story Davies plans to expand on in Season 2. We will also get answers about Anita Dobson’s character, Mrs. Flood, and her breaking the fourth wall in Season 2, as Davies promised.
While waiting for more Doctor Who, you can watch Season 1 on Disney+ in the US.
