Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless is the latest installment in the Disgaea series, which has been a classic in the gaming world for over two decades. Nippon Ichi developed this strategic role-playing game that allows players to venture through a dark and humorous world where demons and angels battle for power and redemption. Nippon Ichi is celebrating its 30th anniversary with the release of Disgaea 7. Nippon Ichi is known for its RPG-based games, but none are as iconic as the Disgaea series. With a Fall release date, this installment promises to be the most exciting release in the series to date, introducing a cast of devilish characters and fun new features.

Vows of The Virtueless Details
The Disgaea series debuted on January 2003 in Japan with the release of Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, which was later re-released as Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness and Disgaea DS. This franchise has become one of Nippon Ichi’s most popular and successful works, getting manga and anime adaptations. The highly strategic and detailed gameplay has made the game a fan favorite.
The Disgaea series takes place in the “Netherworld,” a parallel universe inhabited by demons where moral values are reversed compared to humans. Within the Netherworld, multiple realms exist, each ruled by its own Overlord. The games feature a human world, which has advanced technology in Disgaea: Hour of Darkness and “Celestia,” a heavenly realm inhabited by angels.
While the citizens of the Netherworld and Celestia possess human-like qualities, their moral beliefs are opposites. Disgaea 4 reveals that both the Netherworld and Celestia depend on energy from the human world for survival. If humans become more fearful of themselves in comparison to demons and monsters, the existence of the Netherworld is threatened.

The Gameplay
Disgaea follows a mission-based structure from a central hub. In the hub, players can manage equipment and team members and heal their party. Missions are organized into chapters with cutscenes to make the game easy to keep up with. During missions, the player must complete objectives, usually by defeating all enemy forces.
The gameplay takes place on an “isometric grid-based board” with spaces at different heights. Turns to move back and forth between the player and opponents. Party members can help the players by moving, performing melee attacks, or using special abilities. Characters can move and act as long as they haven’t attacked before moving. The player can lay out their moves before executing the attacks.
Successful attacks can lead to the generation of bonus points. Players can use strategies to outplay their opponents and come up on top. Geo Symbols, special objects, and color spaces on the board provide bonuses or penalties to characters on the same colored field. Geo Symbols can be destroyed, damaging the opponent and changing the field’s color.
With bonus points earned, you can gain new characters as well as try to customize your hub by convincing, through battle, the Dark Assembly. You can start a new game with the same characters, items, and abilities as your previous venture. Multiple gameplays allow the players to improve their characters, with the potential to reach high levels, such as 9999 and 186,000 combined levels.
Worth a Download?
The critics tend to like Disgaea’s complex stories, combat system, and touch of humor. However, some have criticized the long learning period and outdated graphics. In the series, Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness achieved the highest score, with an impressive 87% rating on both GameRankings and Metacritic. On the other hand, Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness received the lowest average score in the series, with 74% on Metacritic.
With Disgaea 6 receiving mostly positive feedback from the player base, we can predict Vows of The Virtueless to earn the same. With the new online AI combat feature along with Item Reincarnation and a “Jumbification” feature, which allows players to make characters humongous, Disgaea 7 is on its way to becoming the series’ new superstar.
