Floyd Kane’s most well-known project, Diggstown starring Vinessa Antoine as Marcie Diggs, is all set to air the next episode this week. With many more interesting cases and legal drama, the series has recently started releasing the episodes for the 4th season. Marcie Diggs, a high-profile lawyer in a corporate setting, shifts to her hometown after the unfortunate death of her aunt.
The show deals with a wide range of topics that need attention, such as racism, classism, abortion, and a lot more. Unlike normal court-themed series, Diggstown has Marcie sometimes fight for people who’ve committed crimes. Attention to detail and impeccable acting from the cast make Diggstown stand out from others of its genre.
First aired on March 6th, 2019, Diggstown received positive feedback from critics and was renewed for another 3 seasons. This year though, CBC announced that the 4th season would be the last. So tune in to watch the final season of Marcie Diggs’ journey as a voice for the underprivileged.
Diggstown: The Plot of the Show
The show is based around the city of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The place is known for its diverse population, with the predominant sector being the Black Community. The creator himself is from the place, and this subconsciously adds touches of reality to the show.
Marcie Diggs’ arrives at her hometown after the person closest to her, her aunt, commits suicide. The aunt was involved in a case, and the prosecutor in charge had been blackmailing her. The company she worked for before, Maclver & MacAlpine, failed to protect her aunt. Marcie, now feeling devastated, comes to Halifax Legal Aid, hoping for retribution.
Once she’s back, she realizes just how much more she can impact people working as legal aid at Halifax instead of in a corporate environment. She decides to continue working here even when she receives an offer to work at M&M again. Being of help directly to the victims made Marcie pick her job as a legal aid over her high-paying but less impact job at the previous place.
Diggstown Season 4 Episode 1: Recap
The previous episode, titled “Larissa Crooks,” was aired last Wednesday, October 12th, 2022. It started with Marcie and her therapist talking about a recurring dream that Marcie has been having of her aunt. The therapist advised her to not disclose any hidden trauma she may have.
On the other hand, Halifax Legal aid works on the case against Dr. Lawson, who’s been performing tubectomies on women without their consent. Tubectomy is a sterilization surgery where the fallopian tubes are cut and tied to prevent eggs from implanting in the uterus. Dr. Lawson selectively performs the surgery on black women or people from the LGBTQ+ community.
The court, unfortunately, ends up finding the doctor not liable, as the witness, Morgan’s claims are not able to provide sufficient proof against Lawson. Vivian and Ellery break up as Ellery is the one who calls Marcie back to work on this case. This episode shed light on transphobia and its effects on the lives of the people who are involved.
Marcie, at the end of the episode, still seems not to have dealt with her trauma well, as seeing anything that reminds her of the time she was with her aunt causes her to break down in tears.
