Crimson Desert Lead Engineer says BlackSpace Engine Lets Pearl Abyss Release Updates Faster Than Unreal Engine 5

Crimson Desert lead engineer Jin-hwan Kim has explained why Pearl Abyss continues to rely on its proprietary BlackSpace Engine instead of a commercial solution such as Unreal Engine 5.

In an interview with MeinMMO at gamescom 2026, Kim said the biggest advantage of an in-house engine is the control it gives the developers over updates and the direction of development.

Pearl Abyss has previously showcased BlackSpace as the technology powering Crimson Desert, including features such as real-time lighting, ray tracing, water simulation, and GPU-based hair and cloth simulation.

BlackSpace Gives Pearl Abyss More Control Over Updates

According to Kim, Pearl Abyss’s ability to modify its own engine allows the team to implement necessary changes without waiting for a third-party engine developer to introduce new functionality. He explained that while commercial engines provide useful features, relying on external technology could have created delays when the team’s development plans did not align with an engine provider’s update schedule.

Kim specifically highlighted this as an advantage for Crimson Desert’s patch development. While he did not claim to have conducted a direct technical comparison against other engines, he said the proprietary nature of BlackSpace gives Pearl Abyss a “speed advantage” when implementing updates.

The engine was also designed with broader flexibility in mind. Kim explained that the older Black Desert engine became heavily specialized around that game, making it harder to adapt to different genres. BlackSpace was instead built to support different types of games and multiple platforms, with Pearl Abyss also using it as a technological foundation for other projects.

The engine’s development also reflects Pearl Abyss’s experience creating large-scale online worlds. Crimson Desert was originally planned as an MMORPG, and the developers said BlackSpace was built with multiplayer support from the beginning, although they did not confirm that multiplayer will be added to the current game.

Performance remains an ongoing challenge. Kim acknowledged that Crimson Desert still has shortcomings in extremely complex situations and said the team is working on improvements. Pearl Abyss has also focused on scalable rendering and reducing memory consumption, with the developers working toward making the game run on lower-spec hardware such as Nintendo Switch 2.

BlackSpace’s development has therefore been less about simply creating another proprietary engine and more about giving Pearl Abyss control over how its technology evolves. That flexibility is particularly important for a studio supporting a large open world while continuing to deliver updates after launch.
