The Dragon Quest franchise has officially surpassed 100 million units in cumulative shipments and digital sales, Square Enix has announced. The milestone arrives during the series’ 40th anniversary year, marking a major achievement for one of Japan’s most influential RPG franchises.

The figure covers the franchise as a whole rather than an individual game, encompassing its mainline releases, spin-offs, remakes and other titles. Square Enix’s reported digital figures have been tracked since April 2015, alongside physical shipments. The series had already exceeded 97 million combined units earlier in 2026, meaning it crossed the 100 million mark within the same anniversary year.

Dragon Quest Reaches 100 Million Sales After 40 Years

The original Dragon Quest launched in Japan on May 27, 1986, helping establish many conventions associated with Japanese role-playing games. The franchise has since expanded to 11 mainline entries, numerous spin-offs and adaptations across anime, manga, novels, films and merchandise.

Recent releases and remakes have also contributed to keeping the series active across modern platforms. Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake and Dragon Quest VII Reimagined have brought older adventures to new audiences, while Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon – Classic HD recently launched across multiple platforms.

Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii also marked the milestone with a message thanking fans and the development teams who helped the franchise reach its 40-year anniversary. Horii said he never imagined the original game would eventually reach this point and expressed his hope for “many more adventures” from the series.

The franchise is already looking toward its next chapter. Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate remains in development, while Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World is scheduled to launch on December 3, 2026, across Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

With the 100 million milestone arriving during its 40th anniversary, Dragon Quest enters its fifth decade with multiple projects continuing the series’ long-running RPG legacy.
