Christopher Judge has finally explained why he did not pursue the opportunity to play Kratos in Prime Video’s live-action God of War series. The actor, who has voiced and motion-captured Kratos since 2018’s God of War and reprised the role in God of War Ragnarök, said the demanding physical and time commitments involved in leading the television adaptation ultimately made the role unappealing to him.
Judge discussed the decision during a Fan Expo appearance, where he addressed both the upcoming adaptation and Dave Bautista taking over the role after Ryan Hurst’s departure. His comments make clear that his decision was not about a lack of affection for Kratos, but about whether he was willing to put his body through another physically exhausting production at his age.
Why Christopher Judge Decided Against Live-Action Kratos
In an interview and panel discussion covered by Collider, Judge explained that he had initially considered the possibility of playing Kratos in live action. However, the reality of becoming the lead of a major television production changed his mind, particularly because of the physical preparation and lengthy filming schedule the role would demand.
“I didn’t want to, at 62 years old, work 16-to-18-hour days,”
Judge said during the Fan Expo discussion, adding that he also did not want to be constantly dieting and working out for the part.
Judge also compared the prospect with his experience on Stargate SG-1, where he played Teal’c for years. Although that series was already physically demanding, he noted that Kratos would require him to maintain an intense physical condition while appearing in most scenes.
He eventually read for the role, but said his own mind and body were telling him that he did not want to return to that lifestyle. His decision is particularly notable because Judge had previously expressed interest in bringing his version of Kratos to live action.
Judge Supports Dave Bautista as Kratos

With Judge stepping away, Ryan Hurst was initially selected to play Kratos before leaving the production following an injury. Dave Bautista has since taken over the role, bringing his experience from major action productions including Guardians of the Galaxy and Dune to the PlayStation adaptation.
Judge remains supportive of Bautista and hopes the actor can approach Kratos with the same respect that fans have for the character. Speaking about Bautista, Judge said,
“I think he’s going to be great,”
while expressing concern that the physical transformation required for Kratos should not create additional health problems.
Prime Video’s God of War is being developed by Ronald D. Moore, with Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios producing the series. Amazon has described the story as focusing on Kratos and Atreus as they travel through the Norse world, continuing the father-son narrative established by the recent games.
Judge has also emphasized that whoever plays Kratos should understand the emotional side of the character rather than focusing solely on his physical presence. For the actor, the key is authenticity, particularly as the live-action series adapts one of PlayStation’s most recognizable characters.
