The 1989 Tom Clancy book of the same name served as the inspiration for the 1994 American action thriller Clear and Present Danger, which was directed by Phillip Noyce. It is a prequel to Patriot Games and The Hunt for Red October and features Jack Ryan, a character played by Tom Clancy.
It is the final adaptation of Noyce’s Noyce-directed Clancy novels to star Harrison Ford as Ryan and James Earl Jones as Vice Admiral James Greer. As in the book, Ryan is made acting deputy director of the CIA and soon learns that his colleagues are keeping him in the dark about a clandestine campaign against a drug gang in Colombia, ostensibly with the president’s blessing.
On August 3, 1994, the movie premiered in American theatres. It was a commercial triumph, grossing more than $215 million globally. The Hacienda San Gabriel de la Palmas in Cuernavaca served as a set for Escobedo’s headquarters, and Mexico City served as Bogotá after the studio felt that filming on location in Colombia was too dangerous.
Ironically, the Chiapas conflict’s onset caused additional challenges for the plan to shoot the movie in Mexico. The 1994 Northridge earthquake destroyed some of the U.S.-shot footage, and the movie ran far behind schedule and over budget.

Hacienda San Gabriel de las Palmas – Km 41.8 Carretera Federal Cuernavaca – Chilpancingo, Amacuzac, Morelos, Mexico, which was Escobedo’s hacienda’s garden, courtyard, and cellar. 2039 New Hampshire Avenue NW, Washington, District of Columbia, USA, which was Moira Wolfson’s house.
J. Edgar Hoover FBI Building – 10th Street & Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, District of Columbia, USA which was FBI headquarters exteriors. CIA Headquarters, Langley, Virginia, USA, which was the general view.
Andrews Air Force Base, Camp Springs, Maryland, USA, which was C-141 – Offloading of the caskets and also the place where Jack Ryan meets his wife at the DV Lounge. Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico, were used as street scenes.
John Wayne Airport – 18601 Airport Way, Santa Ana, California, USA, was the place where Ryan met Clark. Coatepec, Veracruz, Mexico, the place where the SUV convoy starts at the Iglesia de la Virgen de Guadalupe.
Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, USA, was the place of Greer’s funeral. Paraíso 3, Barrio de San Miguel, Tepoztlán, Morelos, Mexico which was Escobedo’s hacienda’s terrace. Mexico City, Distrito Federal, Mexico, was the last location and was used as an ambush street set.
Plot Of The Movie
The Enchanter yacht, a strange ship that tried to evade search by displaying a Panamanian flag, was approached and stopped by a US Coast Guard patrol boat during the credits. When the cops boarded, they discovered “a bad one.”
In a meeting with Admiral James Greer (James Earl Jones) at the CIA’s Langley, Virginia, headquarters, Jack Ryan (Harrison Ford) was given the South Caribbean event to investigate and instructed to “be discreet.”
The victim on board the boat was a personal friend and political supporter of US President Bennett (Donald Moffatt). Therefore, he immediately informed the President and his advisors about the tragedy in the White House.
In the yacht’s master stateroom, an American businessman called Peter Hardin and his entire family had been brutally murdered before being dumped overboard. The yacht’s owners had previously been detained in Colombia’s capital city of Bogota on suspicion of trafficking drugs and were thought to have connections to the Cali Cartel.
Henry Czerny’s character Robert Ritter, the deputy director of operations for the CIA, described it as “straight piracy and murder.”
