What if you develop a bond of friendship with an adorable ghost after you visit the mansion he haunts people in? What if he isn’t the only ghost around, and your bond of friendship is threatened by his uncle? Directed by Brad Silberling, the live-action supernatural comedy film titled “Casper” focuses on an adorable ghost, Casper, and the budding friendship between him and Kat, the teenage daughter of James Harvey, a ghost specialist.
The film ensues the adventure the pair of Casper and Kat go after Casper starts to fall in love with her, but his uncle’s mischievous antics cause trouble between the two.
The tale of Casper focuses on Carrigan Crittenden, a spoiled woman furious at her father for only writing a gloomy mansion to her name and the chaos that ensues after she finds a map marking a treasure hidden in the mansion.
The moment Carrigan Crittenden enters the mansion, she is haunted by wicked spirits, so she hires Jack, an afterlife therapist, to deal with them, who comes to live in the mansion with his teenage daughter to deal with the issues.
The twist comes when Kat befriends the adorable ghost of Caspar, living with his three mischievous ghost uncles in the Whipstaff Manor in Friendship, an abandoned mansion in Maine.
Written by Sherri Stoner and Deanna Oliver, the comedy film is based on a book by Joe Oriolo and Seymour Reit titled Casper The Friendly Ghost.
The film did amazingly at the box office with a collection of $287.9 and an initial budget of $55 M. Produced by Chris Collin, the film stars Malachi Pearson voicing the character of Caspar, a lonely ghost craving for a friend, Christina Rocci playing Kathleen’s role, Jack’s daughter.
Bill Pullman plays Dr. James role, a widow and Kat’s dad; Cathy Moriarty plays Catherine’s character, a treacherous, greedy woman; and Joe Nipote voices the character of Strech in the lead. The movie uplifts the viewer’s mood with its heartfelt moments and humor.
Caspar – Premise
The film starts with the spoiled heiress Carrigan Crittenden discovering that the only thing her father left for her in the will is the Whipstaff Manor located in Maine after the death of her dad and the vast of his remaining wealth being donated to charities.
After Carrigan and Dibs, her lawyer friend, discover a map within the will’s papers that informs the pair of an alleged treasure hidden in the mansion during their trip to the manor. A determined Carrigan and Dibs attempt to get the treasure out of the mansion, but as it is haunted by a friendly ghost, Caspar and his uncles, the pair run away in fear.
Dibs and Carrigan hire paranormal experts and a demolition team in an attempt to force Caspar and his uncles out of the house.
Meanwhile, Caspar, the lonely ghost, watches a news report about Jack, a paranormal therapist, and gets smitten by Kat, his teenage daughter. This prompts Caspar to hint and inspire Carrigan to hire Jack to Whipstaff Manor.
Meanwhile, Kate is tired of her father’s obsession with summoning the ghost of Amelia, his late wife. After Carrigan summons Jack, he moves to the mansion with his daughter, but Caspar’s attempt to befriend Kat fails terribly after his uncles try to scare away the pair, which they fail miserably.
Meanwhile, Caspar gains Harvey’s trust after serving them breakfast and following Kat to her new school, where she gains popularity after her classmates figure out that her living in the Whipstaff mansion.
Kat agrees to host the Halloween party at the mansion, but her rival Amber plots with Vic, her friend, to humiliate Kat during the Halloween party. Meanwhile, Jack tries a therapy session with Caspar’s ghost trio uncles, who reveal to him about knowing Amelia and promise him a meeting with his late wife’s soul in exchange for Carrigan leaving them alone.
Caspar and Kat’s bond begins to deepen, and she learns that he has no idea of his past life and restores Caspar’s playroom in the attic in an attempt to remind him of his past life.
This leads to Caspar recognizing an old wooden sled his father brought him and playing with the sled in the cold weather until he catches a cold and dies of pneumonia, thus becoming a ghost to continue to keep his father company.
Meanwhile, a newspaper article reveals that Caspar’s father was declared insane after he built the Lazarus, a machine he claimed could be used to bring back the dead.
Meanwhile, Casper and Kat go to the basement in an attempt to find the machine, while Carrigan and Dibs try to sneak inside the mansion to steal the formula required to power the machine to become immortal.
However, the pair attempt to kill each other to test the theory, which ends in Carrigan becoming a ghost after she falls to her death from a cliff. Meanwhile, Harvey becomes depressed after Caspar’s uncles pull a prank on him that prompts the trio to take Jack out of town.
The trio plan to end Jack’s life but change their mind after the drunken therapist informs them about his decision to make Carrigan leave.
Even though the ghosts have a change of heart, Jack still dies after falling to his death in a drunken state. Meanwhile, in the laboratory, Carrigan confronted Caspar and Kat while attempting to steal the treasure and throwing Dibs out a window after he tried to double-cross her.
Kat and Caspar trick Carrigan into going to her afterlife, and the treasure is revealed to be nothing more than a signed baseball.
Jack’s ghost returns to the mansion, and noticing Kat’s despair after learning about her father’s death, Caspar gives up his chance at life and restores Jack. After the chaos ends, Kat’s Halloween party kicks off, and Amber’s plan fails after the ghosts scare her into running.
The ghosts get Jack to meet with his dead wife, who informs him about her moving on to the afterlife. The film ends with the ghosts partying with Kat and Jack after scaring away their guests.
Casper: Filming Locations
The filming of Caspar began on January 27, 1994, and wrapped up on June 8, 1994, with Camden, Maine, as the prime location.
1. Camden Maine
Known for its rich cultural heritage, a beautiful town in Maine, Camden was used by the production crew for the filming of the comedy film. The resort town was used to bring authenticity to the movie as the production crew felt the natural beauty and charm of the area was perfect for the filming of the movie.
The location allowed the production crew to capture the true essence of the small town depicted in the movie. Rockport was another location in Maine to film some parts of the comedy movie.
2. California
Known for the Hollywood sign and the Golden Gate Bridge, the captivating state of California, located in the western region of the United States, was used for the filming of the comedy movie. Stage 12, Universal Studios, was used to film the interior and exterior parts of the Whipstaff Manor.
Colonial Mansion, Backlot was another location used by the production crew to film some parts of the movie. The mansion stands demolished as of today, and people can no longer visit the location.
