The Callisto Protocol has been in development since 2019 and was intended to be part of a larger PUBG universe. However, it has become its world, free of any ties to PUBG, thanks to the mind of Glen Schofield (who previously co-created Visceral Games’ Dead Space series).
The Callisto Protocol is a new sci-fi horror game created by Dead Space creator Glen Schofield’s new studio, Striking Distance Studios. While The Callisto Protocol is a third-person survival horror experience similar to Dead Space, it appears to be more terrifying than the former. If you like to spend your time hiding in fear behind your couch, you’ll want to know when The Callisto Protocol will be released. That way, you’ll know exactly how much time you have before embarking on what the game’s website describes as a “next-generation take on survival horror” as you attempt to escape a space prison.

The Callisto Protocol story
We’ve learned a lot about what’s going on in The Callisto Protocol story since it was revealed. It takes place in the year 2320 in a prison colony called Black Iron on Jupiter’s moon Callisto. We take on the role of one of the inmates, Jacob Lee (Josh Duhamel), who becomes embroiled in a battle with other inmates who have transformed into monstrous creatures. The prison warden, who works for the United Jupiter Company, is involved in this in some way.
In the trailer, Jacob Lee appears to play a larger role in the antagonist’s plot than simply being a bystander caught up in a larger conspiracy. My theory is based on the classic sci-fi trope of corrupted capitalist tendencies, in which inmates in a private prison are used as experiments for the “betterment of mankind,” aka money. That could be completely wrong, but that’s my game theory.

The Callisto Protocol gameplay
If you’ve played Dead Space, you’ll be familiar with The Callisto Protocol’s gameplay. It’s a third-person survival-horror shooter full of spook and death, mostly your own. We got a longer look at the gameplay, which included some melee and ranged weapons, as well as a look at Jacob’s abilities. In a stasis-like manner, he drew one of the enemies toward him. It appears to be a one-of-a-kind gravity weapon once used by Black Iron guards to control the prison population. Like in Dead Space, your health bar is at your back (specifically, your neck), and you can curb stomp enemies who try to get back up. It is also critical to remove the enemy’s limbs.
Death appears to be frequent and gruesome. Looking at the various ways you could be destroyed made me a little queasy. Of course, the enemies can kill you in a variety of ways, but standing too close to the wrong machine can get you sucked in like a vacuum and turned into spaghetti. Gross! The Callisto Protocol is powered by Unreal Engine 5, as evidenced by how stunning and terrifying everything looks.
