Bill Belichick, at 72, has recently experienced a surge in social media activity after being appointed head coach at the University of North Carolina on December 12. Belichick shared on ESPN’s The Pat McAfee Show that his Instagram DMs have been flooded, as many college athletes express interest in joining the Tar Heels.
He humorously admitted to adjusting to the digital age, saying, “My Instagram account has been busy. Scrolling through that. Never thought I’d be saying that. But here I am. Joining the 21st century.” Belichick, known for his traditional approach to coaching, is embracing social media to connect with potential recruits.
The former head coach of the New England Patriots is entering the recruiting world, especially with the transfer portal becoming a major route for athletes to switch schools. “It seems like every day, as teams’ seasons conclude with the bowl games and the playoff, they’re coming up,” Belichick explained, noting how recruits often emerge after their teams’ seasons end.
As part of his recruiting efforts, Belichick revealed that the University of North Carolina will host potential players on January 4 and 11, inviting them to visit the campus. He expressed enthusiasm about the process, saying, “It’s been fun, it’s been good…The school’s been great.”
Despite the modern approach, McAfee, known for his playful humor, joked about Belichick’s use of social media. He remarked on how strange it is to see the old-school coach using “SnapFace” and “MyFace” DMs to connect with recruits. McAfee teased that many people would be excited to see which athletes would join North Carolina under Belichick’s leadership.
While managing his social media and coaching duties, Belichick is also featured regularly on Instagram by his 24-year-old girlfriend, Jordon Hudson. The couple has shared glimpses of their life together, including a post from Hudson announcing her move to Chapel Hill when Belichick took the UNC job.
Hudson and Belichick’s relationship began in 2021 when Hudson was in college. They became Instagram official in October, and since then, Hudson has posted many updates about their relationship. When Belichick was hired, Hudson expressed her excitement about joining him in North Carolina, marking a new chapter in both their personal and professional lives.
Belichick will officially begin his new role as head coach at the University of North Carolina in April, with spring practices scheduled to start then.
