When it comes to singing or on social media, many people know about Harry Styles. He’s an Englishman whose musical career kicked off in the series The X Factor. And though he didn’t make it in that show, he got picked up by a band called ‘One Direction’. And that really did well for him because he became an international success ever since. The boy band became one of the greatest boy bands ever. But did you know that Harry Styles has worked in several movies as well?
But there’s a side of Harry Styles many people don’t know. And those are his acting skills. Despite his age —28 years— Styles has a few documentaries and a couple of big Hollywood films to his name. He’s shared screens with great stars like Angelina Jolie and worked for great directors like Christopher Nolan. That’s just one side of this multi-faceted guy who has a knack for working. Now, without any further ado, let’s see some of the best movies by Harry Styles.
One Direction: This Is Us
Though this is a 2013 documentary, it’s the first movie Harry Styles has ever been in. It’s a 3D documentary film that shows the backstage work and performance of a One Direction concert back on August 29, 2013. This film was directed by Morgan Spurlock. Yes. Weird. That Morgan Spurlock. The same dude who made Super Size Me back in 2004, remember? That documentary about a dude who ate all those McDonald’s burgers? It’s mind-boggling how he ended up with this gig. Still, Spurlock managed to capture an all-access take at the lives on the road of the One Direction boys.
One Direction: This Is Us features all five members from that boy band. It stars Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Zyan Malik, and Nial Horan. With great cuts, amazing editing, and good handling of camerawork by Spurlock, he manages to get the boys in their natural habitat. Rehearsing, goofing off, chilling with their fans, eating, and also giving interviews. Moreover, the shots from the concert were taken during a performance at London’s O2 Arena. Also, this documentary premiered back in 2013. Lastly, if you want to watch it, you can stream it from Tubi. It’s available for rent or purchase from Apple iTunes, Vudu Fandango, Google Play, YouTube TV, the Microsoft Store, RedBox, and DirecTV. Check out the trailer below:
One Direction: Where We Are — The Concert Film
Directed by Paul Dugdale and produced by Jim Parsons —yes, the dude from The Big Bang Theory— this is another documentary film where Harry Styles joins his former boy band dudes from One Direction. It’s from 2014 and chronicles the days between June 28 and 29 that year. During those days, Harry Styles and his band were working at the “Where We Are Tour” at the San Siro Stadium in Milano, Italy.
Essentially, the film is a sequel to ‘This Is Us,’ and it contains footage from the concert, as well as backstage footage and some fifteen-minutes worth of interviews with every member of One Direction. Initially, the movie gained a lot of expectation and hype because three of the One Direction boys —Malik, Horan, and Louis— were with a camera crew all over Brazil during a visit to Rio de Janeiro. So, when the press asked them what’s up with that, they spilled the beans. Also, the movie premiered worldwide in October 2014. Lastly, if you want to watch Where We Are, you can do it from Apple iTunes. Check out the trailer below.
Harry Styles: Behind The Album
Harry Styles as a solo artist, has a recording contract with Columbia and also launched his own label, Erskine. His debut solo single “Sign of the Times” dropped back in April 2016 and is part of his self-titled debut album. On this endeavor, he decided to work with Fulwell 73, a film company, to develop what would be “Harry Styles: Behind the Album”. This is a documentary that chronicles his musical life, creative process, and how his solo album came to be.
Here we see a more mature Harry, with a lot of focus on his projects. Also, the documentary contains several scenes filmed in London, Los Ángeles, and Jamaica. Moreover, we also get to see some of Harry and his band playing songs from his album from the Abbey Road studio in London. In case you’re not familiar with Abbey Road, that’s where artists like the Beatles recorded their songs.
Dunkirk
The 2017 war film by Christopher Nolan Dunkirk is a cinematographic masterpiece of its own kind. Firstly, it has Harry Styles —in his debut as an actor— as part of an ensemble cast starring Kenneth Branagh, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Barry Keoghan, Aneurin Barnard, James D’Arcy, Fionn Whitehead, and Mark Rylance. Secondly, it’s a brilliant film in which dialogue is scarce, the soundtrack —by Hans Zimmer— is more of an ambiance sound to give you an idea of what the protagonists are going through.
Dunkirk depicts the historic evacuation of Dunkirk in which the soldiers had to retreat to the beach and be carried in boats and ships against all odds because the enemy was out to get them. The scenes and stories are not interconnected except for the general plot. For Harry’s character, he’s part of a group of soldiers stuck on the beach surviving the relentless machine-gun barrage. Alex —Harry’s character— and his platoon eventually hide in a beached trawler as they nervously wait. Eventually, Alex makes it out, rides a boat home, and hops on board a train to read the newspaper that wrote the speech that Winston Churchill gave regarding the Dunkirk incident. If you want to rent this movie, you can do it from iTunes, Amazon Direct Video, Google Play, YouTube TV, Vudu, Microsoft Store, RedBox, and Spectrum. Check out the trailer.
Eternals
Marvel’s Eternals is a 2021 Super Hero action movie by Chloé Zhao starring Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Barry Keoghan, Harry Styles, Gemma Chan, Lia McHugh, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Kumail Nanjiani, Don Lee, and Harish Patel. It tells the story of the ten Eternal Arishem sent to planet earth 5000 years ago on a starship —the Domo— to eliminate an alien force called the Deviants. As they fulfilled their goal, they had an argument back in the year 1521, and each of them separated and went about their business on the earth, living among the humans going unnoticed.
In Eternals, Harry Styles plays a character called Eros —or Starfox. But his time on the film is virtually that one of seconds on film during a mid-credits cameo scene. And while that technically classifies him for this post, it’s a bit of a stretcher. Now, who’s Eros —or Starfox? He’s another eternal stationed on Titan, another planet different from Earth that decided to desert as an eternal and will surely come back during an Eternals sequel/follow-up movie by Marvel for some story arc. If you want to watch Eternals, you can do it from Disney+. Check out the trailer.
Don’t Worry Darling
Harry Styles in another movie —in a more prominent role, apparently, because the movie still hasn’t dropped yet— this time a psychological thriller directed by Olivia Wilde —she’s also in the movie— and produced by Roy Lee. It stars Florence Pugh, Harry, Gemma Chan, Nick Kroll, and Chris Pine. Secondly, the plot revolved around a very unhappy housewife in the mid-20th century as she discovers something that unsettles her as her husband hides a really dark secret.
This movie is produced by New Line Cinema and Vertigo Entertainment and is slated to be released on September 23, 2022, by Warner Bros. Pictures. Though we haven’t seen it, it’s always good to see our boy Harry Styles in a new role, a challenging one that will push him into bigger challenges in his acting career. That’s good for him. And just for that reason, he deserves a spot in this article.
Conclusion
To wrap things up, though Harry Styles has only a few films under his belt, the man —no longer the little boy we once saw with One Direction— has a lot going on for him. He’s worked with Chris Nolan, he’s gotten gigs with Marvel, and he’s also doing indie films. The important thing here is that he’s sticking his neck out to be recognized for his talent. And that’s always a good, positive thing. With this, we conclude our coverage of this topic here at Otakukart.
