Becoming Elizabeth Episode 1 Recap
The death of Henry VIII has thrown England into disarray. Henry’s three legitimate children, Mary, Elizabeth, and Edward, are notified of their father’s death in the middle of the night, and Edward is proclaimed king. His uncle Edward Seymour whisks King Edward away from his sisters the following day. Elizabeth questions Seymour’s actions and intentions with her brother. Meanwhile, Catherine Parr, Henry’s widow, has an affair with Thomas Seymour and appears relieved by the king’s death.
Thomas and Catherine debate the country’s fate after learning that Somerset has summoned King Edward to court. Elizabeth relocates to Catherine Parr’s Chelsea home. The Duke of Somerset forbids Henry Grey from attending a council meeting. To Thomas Seymour’s chagrin, Edward appoints Somerset as Lord Protector. Young Elizabeth meets Thomas Seymour on several occasions and develops a crush on him. Elizabeth talks about marriage prospects with her governess Kat Ashley, who is taken aback by Elizabeth’s suggestion that she and Thomas Seymour marry.
Edward
Edward learns of a possible marriage between himself (Edward) and Mary, Queen of Scots, which his father had hoped for. After that, Edward appears unconcerned about the match or the money required to bring her to England. Finally, he agrees and gives Somerset and the army permission to take her away. The English and Scottish armies engage in a bloody battle. At court, Henry Grey flaunts his young daughter, Lady Jane Grey, hoping to be noticed for his family’s proximity to the throne.
Edward later asks Thomas Seymour why he must marry Mary and not for love at a banquet celebrating the presumed military victory over Scotland. Thomas is taken aback and asks Edward who he loves. Edward’s gaze is drawn to Jane Grey. Edward and Elizabeth learn of Catherine and Thomas’s secret marriage in private, much to Elizabeth’s chagrin. Jane Grey is moving into Catherine and Thomas’ home, which upsets Elizabeth.
A Heated Argument
Elizabeth and Jane have a heated argument about Jane’s proximity to the throne, which Elizabeth perceives as a threat. Elizabeth, enraged, expresses her feelings about Jane to Catherine, unaware that Thomas Seymour is present and listening in. She and Seymour speak privately, embarrassed, as she profusely apologizes for her words. Seymour strokes Elizabeth’s face as he talks about possible marriages. Although Thomas and Elizabeth come close to kissing, Seymour pulls away from a befuddled Elizabeth.
