Avengers: Endgame has reclaimed the title of the highest-grossing movie of all time, once again moving ahead of James Cameron’s Avatar after its latest theatrical re-release. The 2019 Marvel blockbuster has now earned an estimated $2.9255 billion worldwide, narrowly surpassing Avatar at approximately $2.9237 billion.

The milestone comes after Disney and Marvel brought the film back to theaters as Avengers: Endgame Encore. According to The Walt Disney Company, the re-release pushed Endgame back into first place on the global box office chart.

ENDGAME TAKES BACK THE BOX OFFICE CROWN

Endgame originally became the highest-grossing movie ever after its 2019 release, eventually crossing the $2.7 billion mark. Avatar later regained the record following subsequent theatrical re-releases, allowing the two movies to repeatedly trade positions at the top of the worldwide box office.

Now, Endgame has reclaimed the crown for a second time. The difference between the two films is currently only a few million dollars, meaning Endgame Encore could potentially increase its lead while it remains in theaters.

The timing of the re-release is also significant. Marvel has returned Endgame to cinemas less than three months before Avengers: Doomsday, giving audiences another opportunity to revisit the conclusion of the Infinity Saga while introducing additional material connected to the next Avengers movie.

Avengers: Endgame Encore adds approximately four minutes of new material, including an expanded ending and three additional scenes that provide clues about the MCU’s next major storyline. The new footage features Steve Rogers, Loki, Bruce Banner, the TVA, and Doctor Doom.

One new sequence expands Steve and Peggy Carter’s final moments. Instead of ending immediately with their dance, Loki arrives and suggests that he can help them, potentially connecting Steve’s alternate timeline to the larger multiverse storyline.

Another scene follows Bruce Banner after the events of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Banner is hiding underground while working on a way to control his Hulk transformations when Doctor Doom arrives and takes him. The scene ends before revealing exactly what Doom wants with Banner.

The remaining footage expands the multiverse crisis and then shows Doctor Doom forging his iconic metal mask. The latter scene deliberately echoes the metallic hammering heard at the end of the original Endgame, which previously referenced Tony Stark building his first Iron Man armor.

The renewed success of Endgame suggests that audiences remain highly interested in Marvel’s major crossover stories despite years of discussion surrounding superhero fatigue. A seven-year-old movie returning to theaters and reclaiming the global box office record demonstrates the enduring popularity of the original Avengers saga.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026, with the Russo brothers returning to direct.
