Filmmaker Matthew Vaughn, known for his action-packed adventures, faced an unexpected blow with his latest film, Argylle.
Despite the film’s warm reception from test audiences, it garnered only 33% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Vaughn expressed surprise at the harsh criticism, noting he didn’t aim to revolutionize cinema but rather to entertain.
Vaughn candidly told Empire Magazine, “F-ck yeah,” when asked if the critical response disappointed him. He shared his optimism following positive test screenings and an exciting premiere, comparing the atmosphere to his earlier success with Snatch.
“It’s a fun, feel-good movie, or I thought it was,” Vaughn reflected. The vitriolic reviews left him puzzled and rattled, prompting him to question where he went wrong.
Blending action, humor, romance, and adventure, Vaughn believed the playful spy story would resonate more with critics. Despite acknowledging the film’s imperfections, he was taken aback by the negativity, remarking, “I’m not saying the movie’s perfect, but I didn’t think it was offensive.”
Vaughn even visited cinemas to gauge audience reactions firsthand, finding it difficult to ignore the critical consensus. Unfortunately, the film’s box office performance mirrored the reviews, earning only $96.1 million globally.
Argylle stars Bryce Dallas Howard as Elly Conway, a reclusive author whose espionage novels start mirroring real-life spy activities.
Alongside Aidan, a spy played by Sam Rockwell, Elly heads on a globe-trotting adventure to stay ahead of the killers, blurring the lines between fiction and reality. Vaughn’s experience with Argylle serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of filmmaking and audience reception.
