Apex Legends is no longer playable on the original Nintendo Switch, marking the end of the battle royale’s six-year run on Nintendo’s first hybrid console. As previously announced by Respawn Entertainment, support officially ended on August 4, 2026, coinciding with the launch of Season 30.
The decision was first communicated by Respawn in January 2026, giving players several months to prepare for the transition. While the original Switch version has now gone offline, the game remains fully supported on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC platforms.
Original Nintendo Switch version reaches end of service
In its earlier announcement, Respawn confirmed that Season 29 would be the final content update for the original Nintendo Switch version. The studio explained that future seasons would only be available on Nintendo Switch 2, allowing the development team to continue improving the game’s technical foundation.
In a statement published on the EA Apex Legends website, Respawn said:
“Season 29 will be the final update for Apex Legends on Nintendo Switch. Future seasons of Apex Legends will continue to be available on Nintendo Switch 2.”
The developer also thanked players who supported the game on Nintendo’s original handheld, adding,
“We are deeply grateful to the Nintendo community that has been with us on this journey since Day 1, and we hope to see you on the Dropship on Nintendo Switch 2.”

Although support for the original console has ended, Respawn confirmed that players do not need to start over if they upgrade. All progression, cosmetics, purchases, and Apex Coins linked to an EA account transfer automatically to Nintendo Switch 2. Existing premium currency purchased on the original Switch could also be used on the newer system before regional digital currency restrictions apply.
The move has not come as a major surprise to much of the community. The original Switch version was widely regarded as the least technically capable version of Apex Legends, often struggling with performance compared to other platforms. Since the launch of Nintendo Switch 2, many players have already migrated to the upgraded hardware, which offers significantly improved performance for Respawn’s free-to-play shooter.
With support now ending on the original Nintendo Switch, Respawn’s focus shifts entirely toward newer hardware while continuing to deliver future seasons across all remaining supported platforms.
