Two days shy of his 87th birthday, Anthony Hopkins marked 49 years of sobriety in an inspiring Instagram video. The Oscar-winning actor shared a heartfelt story about the pivotal moment he decided to stop drinking, offering hope and guidance to those struggling with alcoholism.
“Forty-nine years ago today, I stopped,” Hopkins said in the video, mimicking a drinking gesture. Recalling the turmoil he faced, he explained, “I was having such fun, but then I realized I was in big, big trouble. I couldn’t remember anything and was driving a car drunk out of my skull.”
On that life-changing day, he sought help. “I phoned up a group of people like me alcoholic,” he revealed. “And that was it. Sober. I’ve had more fun these 49 years than ever before.” Hopkins used the moment to encourage others, emphasizing the availability of support for those battling addiction.
Hopkins urged viewers to seek assistance if alcohol is creating problems in their lives. “Having fun is wonderful, having a drink is fine — but if you are having a problem with booze, there is help,” he stated. He explained that alcoholism is a condition, not a flaw, and highlighted the resources available to overcome it.
“One thing I didn’t realize is I was not unique,” he said. “There are thousands of people like me. I got sober, and though it sounds dull, I’ve had a wonderful life. They still employ me, they still give me jobs.”
Hopkins’ reflection comes as he prepares to turn 87 on New Year’s Eve, a day often linked to celebratory drinking. His advice may resonate with those planning for a fresh start in 2025, including those considering a Dry January.
“I’m going to be 87 in two days,” he shared, expressing gratitude for his unexpectedly long life. “If you have a problem, you know where to go. Phone any intergroup, 12-step program, whatever you can do. Because it is a killer.” He ended his message with a warm “Happy New Year!” and a kiss.
Hopkins’ video, captioned “One day at a time. 49 years. Life is in session,” has already amassed over 250,000 likes. Days earlier, he spread holiday cheer with another Instagram post featuring a piano performance. Playfully, he captioned it, “Available for weddings, birthdays, and special occasions… FOR FUN AND FOR FREE.”
The celebrated actor continues to inspire, using his personal journey to spread hope and joy.
