Angus MacInnes, the actor who played the iconic Gold Leader in 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope, has died at the age of 77. Known for his contribution to the legendary sci-fi franchise, he reprised the role in 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story for a cameo appearance.
His family shared the news of his passing on Dec. 30 through the actor’s official Facebook page. MacInnes passed away on Dec. 23, surrounded by loved ones. The statement did not disclose the cause of his death.
“To all Angus’ fans around the world, with breaking hearts, we write this: Angus MacInnes, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, and actor died on 23rd of December 2024. He left us peacefully, surrounded by his family and love,” the family wrote in their heartfelt announcement.
Born in Ontario, Canada, on Oct. 27, 1947, MacInnes began his acting journey in the mid-1970s. He made his first onscreen appearances in Rollerball and the television series Play for Today in 1975. Star Wars: A New Hope was his sixth role, marking a significant milestone in his career.
MacInnes played one of the spaceship pilots fighting alongside Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker in the Death Star battle. His role as Gold Leader became a beloved part of the Star Wars universe and earned him a dedicated fan base over the years.
Aside from Star Wars, MacInnes had a remarkable career spanning four decades. He was featured in films such as Witness, Judge Dredd, and Captain Phillips. His versatility as an actor left a lasting impression on audiences worldwide.
“His work touched countless lives, and he took great pride in being part of these stories that continue to resonate with audiences worldwide,” his family noted in their statement.
MacInnes was also cherished for his interactions with Star Wars fans. He often attended conventions and shared memorable moments with admirers of the saga. His family highlighted how much he valued their passion, describing him as humbled and honored by their admiration.
“Angus was more than an actor — he was a kind, thoughtful, and generous soul who brought warmth and humor into the lives of everyone who knew him,” the family shared. “He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and fellow actors but also by his fans around the world.”
MacInnes’ last onscreen appearance as Gold Leader came through a voice cameo in Rogue One. He leaves behind a legacy that continues to inspire both audiences and the Star Wars community.
