Alfie Andrew appears to be an ordinary kid with messy hair and the go-to teen outfit of jeans and a T-shirt until he starts to sing. The 12-year-old who busked on Market Street and dazzled spectators with his singing abilities made an appearance on the popular television program America’s Got Talent.
Alfie, a native of Manchester, made an appearance on a major US show on Tuesday, June 13th, and performed the Oscar-nominated ballad “Hold My Hand,” which Lady Gaga originally wrote and recorded for the 2022 Tom Cruise movie Top Gun: Maverick.
The audience fell in love with his voice, and he received thunderous applause from them. The singer blew the judges away with his version of the Lady Gaga song, hitting a high note that stunned everyone in the room and had Judge Sofia Vergara declaring she would “buy his album today if she could.” He also received a standing ovation from all of the judges.
Andrew traveled from his home in the United Kingdom to the AGT stage with his “auntie,” as his parents were unable to do so due to jobs and other responsibilities. His audition video, which had the remark from judge Sofia Vergara that he was “going to be a rock star,” has nearly two million views on YouTube and has gained him a quite sizable, hefty online following. But what is the backstory behind this musical genius?

Who is Alfie Andrew?
Alfie Andrew is a twelve-year-old boy from Manchester, England. He said while he was on the show that he “started singing when he was zero years old,” and musical talent isn’t something that runs in his family. As evidence of his early start, viewers were shown an adorable video of a baby Alfie singing into a toy microphone while sporting a white onesie.
When asked about his parents’ professions, he said that his father works on cars, and his mother is a nail technician. It is said that the boy was originally from Reddish and was accompanied by his aunt for the AGT audition after revealing that his parents could not make it but “were waiting for the call” to know if he made it to the next round of the competition.
“The producers told him he should go busking to build up his confidence, which put the idea in his head to try it, and he absolutely loves it,” according to his father, Ste, as reported by the Manchester Evening News. “He doesn’t get nervous at all. If he can’t get a spot on Market Street, he isn’t happy because he wants a big crowd.”

“My audition on America’s Got Talent, it means a lot, ’cause it’s always been my dream to become a singer so I can record my own songs and have a sell-out tour,” he stated.
After being discovered for “The Voice Kids,” Andrew decided to give street performances in order to boost his self-confidence. Despite saying he was “nervous” to take the AGT stage, he has since performed in front of sizable crowds.
Andrew also tried out for The Voice Kids UK in 2022 and sang Whitney Houston’s “Run to You” from the 1992 album “Bodyguard,” but he was unsuccessful in reaching the next round of the competition.

The Judges’ Reaction to His Performance
Sofia Vergara said, “I want to buy your record right now. I think you’re gonna be a rock star.”
Simon Cowell complimented the young performer even further, telling Andrew that he had a really “distinct” voice. “Is it your first time in America?” asked Cowell. To which Alfie said yes.
Cowell had already complimented Andrew on his outfit and how “cool” he looked. He later added, “I think you made the right decision to come here. The people are going to remember you, and they’re going to root for you. You’re so cool. I just can’t get over that.”
After Andrew received positive feedback from all four judges, Cowell went on stage to comment on how similar their outfits looked before leading the young performer back to his aunt.
Andrew’s covers of songs by Lady Gaga, Whitney Houston, Adele, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, and other well-known artists can be found on his YouTube channel and Facebook page, demonstrating his willingness to attempt challenging songs by some of the best singers in history. It seems like the young boy has a bright future ahead.
