“Agatha All Along” reached its conclusion with the last two episodes, “Follow Me My Friend / To Glory At The End” and “Mother Maiden Crone”. The episodes wrapped up Agatha Harkness’s journey, which was filled with tragedy and mystery. Her journey saw her and her coven face trials, leading to both death and major revelations. Among these was the unexpected resurrection of Billy Maximoff and the surprising reveal that Aubrey Plaza’s character was Death itself.
Agatha, Billy, and Jennifer Kale, the remaining members of Agatha’s coven, faced one last trial as they reached the end of the Witches’ Road. What Billy and Jen didn’t know, however, was that Agatha was still in contact with Death, who had an important request: Billy’s soul. Billy had cheated death when his soul inhabited William Kaplan’s body after a fatal car accident, breaking the “Green Cycle.” Death needed Billy’s willing surrender to claim his soul, but the question remained: would Death get Billy’s soul, or would anyone else perish before the journey’s end?
Agatha All Along Ending Explained
The coven finally reached the end of the Road, which turned out to be a circular path. Billy, frustrated and exhausted, began to leave, only to wake up in a strange room with Agatha and Jen. The room, filled with steel walls and flickering lights, was part of the trial, which involved green magic. Jen discovered she had been bound by a spell Agatha cast without realizing Jen was a witch. Jen, in a fit of fury, performed the unbinding ritual and disappeared, seemingly set free by the Road.
Next, Agatha cast a spell to place Billy in a trance, allowing him to find his brother Tommy’s soul. However, this was no simple task. Tommy’s soul could only inhabit a dead body, and Billy focused on a boy who was drowning due to a cruel prank. Billy questioned whether he had to kill the boy for his brother to live, but before Agatha could respond, Billy disappeared. In the final moments, Agatha planted a lock of hair and a seed in the soil, and the seed blossomed into a yellow flower, transforming into a dandelion. The last scene showed Agatha standing in her Westview backyard, face-to-face with Death.
A Struggle with Death
Death was furious with Agatha for not fulfilling her part of the deal and began to end Agatha’s life with “a thousand cuts.” These cuts were delivered through various means, including glass, poison ivy, and a whip from a hose. Just as Agatha’s life seemed to be over, help arrived in the form of Billy, dressed in a costume reminiscent of his comic-book persona as Wiccan. Billy used immense magical power to assist Agatha, repowering her. However, even with Billy’s help, Agatha could not defeat Death.
In a twist of fate, Agatha made the ultimate sacrifice. When Death threatened to take Billy, Agatha surrendered him but, upon reading her mind, Billy chose to sacrifice Agatha instead. A kiss from Death caused Agatha to die, and her body transformed into a mass of flowers. However, her death did not signify the end of her journey, nor the end for Billy.
The True Origins of the Witches’ Road
After Agatha’s death, Billy returned home, only to start noticing strange elements in his room. He realized that he had unknowingly created the Witches’ Road through his powers. This was a significant revelation, aligning with Billy’s comic book history, where he has the ability to warp reality. He could bring things back to life, which allowed him to give Tommy’s soul a new home. However, this also led to the deaths of coven members, including Lilia Calderu, Alice Wu-Gulliver, and Sharon Davis.
The Witches’ Road’s history, however, went even deeper than that. Centuries ago, Agatha had made a pact with Death to spare her son, Nicholas Scratch. Death agreed to give her more time but warned that she would return for him. Over the years, Agatha absorbed the powers of other witches, and the Witches’ Road was born. Agatha tricked witches into forming covens, leading them to their demise, where she could take their powers. This darker side to Agatha’s character adds more complexity to her story, showing how her tragic loss of Nicholas led her down a path of manipulation and deceit.
Agatha’s Ghost and Billy’s New Journey
Even in death, Agatha was not gone. She appeared as a ghost to Billy, confirming that his powers had created the Witches’ Road. As Billy came to terms with the fact that his powers indirectly caused the deaths of his coven members, he discovered that Jen had survived and regained her powers. Jen crawled out from the ground near the Westview sign, showcasing her newfound abilities before flying away unscathed.
Billy, growing tired of Agatha’s lies and her ghostly presence, attempted to banish her with her brooch. However, Agatha confessed that she could not pass on because she was afraid to face Nicholas in the afterlife. Whether this confession was the full truth or not remains unclear, but it stopped Billy from taking further action. Instead, Agatha and Billy decided to form a new coven of two, with a new mission: to find Tommy’s reincarnated soul.
Before they embarked on this new quest, Billy used his powers to forge a simple headstone bearing the names of Alice, Lilia, and Mrs. Davis, memorializing their fallen coven members. As for the future, there is no definitive answer on whether Agatha All Along will return for a second season or remain a limited series. However, with the next chapter in the MCU, Vision Quest, drawing closer, there is potential for Agatha’s story to continue.
Marvel Television has revealed that showrunner Jac Schaeffer and incoming Vision Quest showrunner Terry Matalas have been in discussions about the future of the show. This suggests that Agatha All Along could have a role in the Vision Quest storyline. Either way, Agatha’s story is far from over, even in death, and fans can expect more of her in the future.
