M. Shyamalan has always delivered exceptional films like The Sixth Sense, Split, and Glass, but the ace filmmaker was highly criticized for his sci-fi project titled After Earth. The movie received harsh criticism for being excessively predictable and dull. Even Smith has expressed guilt for dragging his kid into the movie, calling it the most humiliating failure of his career. After Earth: The Plot
The movie introduces us to the new planet Nova Prime as the Earth has been abandoned for a very long time and humanity are at war with an unknown extra-terrestrial civilization. We are told that the people were forced to leave Earth and relocate to Nova Prime approximately a millennia ago. We see Will as Gen. Cypher Raige, who is shown to be in charge of Nova Prime’s most affluent family. Their connection is strained as Kitai, Cypher’s teenage son, struggles to live up to his father’s renowned reputation. When their craft crashes on the inhospitable surface of Earth, Cypher and Kitai are forced to rely heavily on one another or perish. They embarked on a quest to mend their friendship.
After Earth: The Cast
Cyper Raige, a legendary soldier who is getting ready to retire, is portrayed by Will Smith. His son, Kitai Raige, has made an earnest effort to uphold his father’s reputation, yet he frequently fails. Their relationship is then pushed to the ultimate test as they encounter a peril that they could not have predicted. We should also point out that Will Smith’s performance in this was closely examined. Jaden Smith plays Will’s onscreen son, Kitai Raige. Jaden makes a sincere effort to give a good performance, but he lacks the charisma of Will Smith’s presence. The remaining cast members include Glenn as Captain Velan, Zoë Kravitz as Senshi, Okonedo as Faia Raige, and K. Hivju as Security head.
The Hesper Pilot and Hesper Navigator, respectively, are played by Sacha Dhawan and Chris Geere. Outstanding work has been done by the supporting cast. A few performances that stand out are those by Diego Klattenhoff as the Veteran Ranger, David Denman as Private McQuarrie, Lincoln Lewis as Bo, Shiva Kumar as the Training Cadet, and Isabelle Fuhrman as Rayna. Smith, however, was wasted in this movie. There is no doubt about him delivering what he was provided with very well.
After Earth Filming Locations
A third of the post-apocalyptic feature was shot in Humboldt Redwoods State Park, where producers had to take extra care to film among groves of 1,000–1,500-year-old trees. The picture, which was distributed by Columbia Pictures, was also shot in Philadelphia, Moab, Utah, and Costa Rica, where the crew worked hard to construct grand sets. Humboldt and Del Norte counties’ coastal redwoods have been depicted in “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” and “The Lost World: Jurassic Park.” Switzerland and La Fortuna, Costa Rica, serve as the locations for the thriller’s second half. Some of the scenes where you see mounting space machinery are Spaceport America, USA.
