Who Is Alex Murdaugh? You might have heard already about the Murdaugh Trials going on. On trial is a 54-year-old man accused of killing his wife and son on June 7, 2021. The situation has brought a lot of interest to the central character, Alex Murdaugh. And many don’t know who he is, and many can’t believe his history. So here we are to let you guys know about him and his background.
Alex’s story is like a gangster series, and not just Alex but the entire Murdaugh family has had something big and illegal going down for them since 2015. He belongs to the Murdaugh family, a prominent name in the legal sector. The family has produced district attorneys and lawyers who “supposedly” fought for justice and sent criminals to prison.
We cannot say with certainty that every member was involved in some devious plot, but most of them were. The number of cases and charges on them doesn’t appear coincident. Destroying the good name of his predecessors dating back to 1910, here’s who Alex Murdaugh is.
Who Is Alex Murdaugh?
Richard Alexander “Alex” Murdaugh was born in 1968 in Hampton, South Carolina. There are speculations about his birth; many sites say it’s 1958. But his father, Rudolph Murdaugh III, started dating his mother, Elizabeth Libby Alexander Murdaugh, in 1957, and he has an elder brother, so it’s not possible.
Alex completed his studies at the University of Southern California (USC) in 1990 and then graduated from the oldest law school in the Southwestern United States, the USC School of Law, in 1994. After graduating, he joined the family law firm Peters Murdaugh Parker Eltzroth & Detrick (PMPED).
Given the recent events related to the Murdaugh family and the death of John E. Parker, the firm changed its name to The Parkers Law Group in 2022. Alex married Margaret Kennedy Branstetter (Maggie Murdaugh) and had two sons, Richard “Buster” Alexander Jr. and Paul Terry Murdaugh.
What Is Alex Murdaugh on Trial For?
Alex is trapped in numerous cases and already has charges against him. But they are nothing compared to what he is on trial for beginning January 23, 2023. He is accused of killing his wife, Maggie Murdaugh (52), and Paul Murdaugh (22), yes, a familicide accusation. And if the charges come true, he could face up to 30 years of prison with no parole.
On June 7, 2021, Alex dialed 911 at around 10 PM and said that his wife and son had been shot in the head. He came home to find blood and brain matter spread on the floor. The coroner’s report placed the crime between 9 and 9:30 PM. Alex was with his mother, who had dementia, but her caretaker confirmed it.
The Police let Alex off the hook for the time being. On July 14, 2022, they arrested him, and the grand jury indicted him for killing his wife and son and possessing weapons, to which he pleaded “not guilty” on July 20, 2022. According to the Sun, Mark Keel, Chief of SLED, spent 13 months building a case against the suspect.
To make a case, one needs two bases, evidence – a recording from Paul’s phone showing Alex and Maggie fighting, and motive – to gain sympathy against the 80+ financial charges against him. Let’s see in brief the other charges on him.
What Are The Other Cases On Alex Murdaugh?
As of December 2022, Alex has an estimated 100+ financial charges, and he was arrested for a few of them in October 2021. from tax evasion, land-related felonies, false insurance claims, embezzlement of funds from his clients, murder-for-hire suicide scheme, and drug distribution.
Besides Alex’s murder charge, the now-murdered Murdaugh family was also supposed to go on trial for three suspicious deaths – of Stephen Smith in 2015, Gloria Scatterfield in 2018, and Mallory Beach in 2019.
I didn’t joke when I said he is a gangster character; it’s like Walter White and Saul Goodman in one character, only they didn’t kill their families. He made $14 million in nine years and almost escaped with everything using his money and connections until he started getting trapped.
A lot of charges to go, and the trial will be running for two more weeks at least. Sit tight, and let’s see where this goes with the discoveries every day.
