The truth is getting closer to us. The Old Man is excellently teasing its audience with a theory I proposed last week in an episode full of hints and subtleties. Although “VI” refrains from establishing Angela Adams’ father, all indications strongly suggest that Faraz Hamzad and not Dan Chase is the woman’s biological father. Due to Morgan Bote and his most recent goons, Raymond Waters and Julian Carson, Angela is now the star of her adaptation of Taken. If my hypothesis is correct, she is much more valuable than the typical FBI agent.
Chase’s most recent nightmare gives him the first indication that he and Angela aren’t biologically related: He’s desperately looking for someone late at night when he’s horrified to see a small child being led away by an adult. In contrast, a Young Abbey gives false assurances. Unfortunately, Chase wakes up on his flight to Morocco before he can analyze this dream.
Harper
While Harper is talking on the phone with his anxious wife, who transfers the call to Morgan Bote, Angela speaks with a teller at a Tunisian bank. In reality, Angela’s bank transaction is part of a clever communication system she and her father use to stay in touch. She can let Chase know she is safe and on her way to Morocco through a private shared account.
The information about Harper helping Chase escape and his attempts to kill Chase is now public knowledge. Given that his career is in ruins, Bote has come to Harper’s house offering a very alluring deal: He’ll protect Harper’s reputation if the FBI company man dumps Angela under the bus.
Angela
The next hint to Angela’s fatherhood comes from a stilted conversation between Angela and Harper during a train ride from Tunis to Morocco. They talk about how Angela hasn’t seen her father since 2012, and Angela says it would have been too dangerous to even go to her mother’s funeral. However, what Angela says after that suggests that she knows that she and Dan Chase are not related by blood. She asserts, “That doesn’t make him any less of a father,” while defending the sacrifices she and Chase made for one another with steel in her eyes and voice.
When Angela and Harper enter a Moroccan train station, it is clear that terrible things are about to happen. I’m getting serious Untouchables vibes from this scene because of how frequently stairs are used. At the front door, Harper recognizes a representative of Moroccan intelligence, and Angela confesses to having called the man after Harper’s grandson Henry texted her covertly to say there was a spooky old man inside his house.
The Exit
Harper consents to let Angela leave, but as he descends the stairs, Carson is seen ascending. (Recall that despite hiring Carson a few episodes ago, Harper has no idea what Carson looks like.) Harper is unaware that Bote’s plan has been carried out until he sees Waters sitting outside in a van. When he quickly returns upstairs, Angela is nowhere to be found. Chase and Zoe, portraying Henry and Marcia Dixon at Pavlovich’s reception, look every bit at the wealthy couple. Before leaving to reunite with the party’s host, Chase places a shaken Zoe at the bar and tells her to remain there. It really shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that veteran Croatian actor Rade Erbedija portrays Old Suleyman Pavlovich. This guy is known for being an aged Russian oligarch.
Reminiscing
While discussing old times with Chase and Pavlovich, Zoe almost exposes herself by attempting to purchase a glass of wine. She is fortunate that the one who caught her error already knows she is not Marcia Dixon. Rowena King’s enigmatic lawyer Nina Kruger (Faraz Hamzad), immediately outs Zoe before attempting to turn her. Given that she erred within the first five minutes of arriving at the party, it might appear at this point that Zoe is a complete failure at the spy game. She instead reveals herself to be a quick learner: Although Kruger appears to be able to assist Zoe, after a few rough presses, Zoe realizes she is better off with Chase than with this dubious lawyer.
Flashbacks
Chase finally meets Pavlovich after a long wait, and he naturally remembers the person who saved his life thirty years prior. The Afghan warlord’s retaliation is no longer a concern for him because Kruger has already recruited him, so he has no interest in paying back his debt to “Hamzad’s monster.” Furthermore, as is already known, once Chase learns of Angela’s kidnapping, his priorities are about to change drastically. What purpose did this Pavlovich gathering serve? That Young Abbey recruited Pavlovich to be her asset while he was a student in Moscow, not the other way around, made Chase realize that he didn’t know his wife that well after all.
The End
There isn’t enough time for a furious Chase to reflect on his wife’s decades-long deception because we need to move the story forward on Angela’s kidnapping. However, he will need more information at some point, probably why he decided not to execute Pavlovich immediately. But by eliminating two of the Russian’s security guards, he creates a distraction that allows the Russian and Zoe to escape. As Chase pilots the boat carrying them back to the mainland, he initially chastises Zoe for leaving the bar.
The boat docks when Zoe and Chase are met with some updates: For one part, the cop helicopter and boats aren’t there to arrest them. For another, Angela was abducted, and Harper tells Chase that “the old man” was responsible for her capture after coming out of the helicopter.
