Fifteen-primetime Emmy Award-winning dystopian Hulu web series The Handmaid’s Tale is back! Here’s everything we know about The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 release date. What will be the great news than that for all The Handmaid’s Tale fans? After all, the show gathered immense popularity across four seasons.
After the season four finale, the prospect for season five became higher than ever. Finally, Hulu came out with details surrounding the Margaret Atwood adaptation of her book’s fifth installment. This season tries to pick up on the last portion of the last one, where the horrid society that now rules the world and its conflicts take place. Now, let’s take a look at what’s coming.
The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4 Recap: The Story So Far
To refresh our memory, here’s a brief recap of what happened. June now leads a mission to extract children out of Gilead into Canada. While she and some other handmaids manage to rescue a large group of kids, they take refuge at a home that belongs to a Commander. Gilead’s forces capture June, put her in prison, and begin torturing her.
Part of the torture is to put Hannah —June’s daughter— in a glass encasement. There, June realizes that Hannah doesn’t recognize her. After June leaves prison, she and the other handmaids are sent into a breeding colony. They manage to escape but barely make it out alive by boarding a freight train heading for Chicago.
Chicago & Canada
In Chicago, there’s a bombing, and June gets rescued by Moira. She’s extracted by Canada again, and she meets her husband and her other daughter. Meanwhile, Serena Waterford finds out she’s pregnant and wants to form a front with Fred since they’re both in Canada. But then, June testifies against Fred and Serena. To save face, Fred agrees to testify against Gilead in exchange for immunity, but he doesn’t stay in Canada because the Gilead government traded him for 22 handmaids.
June exerts her influence and has Fred moved to No Man’s Land rather than Gilead, he’s greeted there by her and members of the post-Gilead support group, and June tells Fred to run. There Fred Waterford experiences the pain and horror and ends up dead. Then, Serena Waterford gets Fred’s severed finger with his ring in the mail.
Cast: Who Can Be In It?
Most of the cast is scheduled to make a comeback. This includes Elisabeth Moss in the stellar role of June, Yvonne Strahovski as Serena Waterford, Samira Wiley as Moira, O.T. Fagbenle as Luke. Noticeably, Alexis Bledel won’t return to reprise her role as Emily, and her role will either be written out or recast.
We can expect Max Mighella as Nick Blaine, Ann Dowd as Lydia, Madeline Brewer as handmaid Janine, and Sam Jaeger as Mark Trello, the US Government Agent. Rounding up the cast, we also have Bradley Whitford, and Fred’s character is confirmed to reappear in season five in flashbacks.
The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 Possible Plotlines
Judging from what Hulu teased us in their social media profiles, Serena Waterford will have some sort of role as a widower in the next season. Moreover, June’s attempts to continue disrupting Gilead’s tyrannical regime will resume with more force. And while Gilead could care less about Fred’s demise, they are surely worried about the state of the war, so we’re going to see some more of that.
